TOLEDO, Ohio – Garret Pike singled to right field to bring home Scott Mackiewicz with the winning run on Saturday as Toledo handed Central Michigan a 4-3 loss in a Mid-American Conference baseball game at the Rockets' Scott Park.
The loss dropped the Chippewas to 32-17, 18-8 MAC. They trail first-place Kent State by two games and share second place with Ball State.
The Chippewas and Rockets close their three-game series on Sunday (1 p.m.).
Ryan Palmblad (1-5) took the loss. The senior left-hander went 4 2/3 innings in relief of starter Keegan Batka, allowing two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out seven.
Down 1-0 after Caden Konczak's first-inning homer, the Chippewas seized a 3-1 lead in the second when Robby Morgan IV was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then Drew Stengren and Jacob Donahue brought in runs with sacrifice flies.
Toledo drew to 3-2 in the second when Jeron Williams drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and then tied it, 3-3, on Williams' infield single in the sixth.
The Chippewas had a golden opportunity to break the tie in the eighth when they put runners at second and third with one out, but Toledo reliever Cal McAnninch got a strikeout and a grounder to end the threat.
Mackiewicz walked to lead off the ninth and went to second on Konczak's one-out infield single. Evan Waters relieved Palmblad and Pike hit a full-count pitch to right field to score Mackiewicz.
Navarra and Christian Mitchelle had two hits each for the Chippewas.
