Baseball Drops Series Finale at Toledo to Fall 3 Games Back in MAC Standings

TOLEDO, Ohio – Central Michigan committed three errors on Sunday in dropping a 5-2 decision to Toledo in the finale of a three-game Mid-American Conference series at the Rockets' Scott Park.
All five Toledo runs were unearned as the Chippewas lost their second consecutive game to the Rockets and dropped a MAC series for the just the second time this season.
CMU is 32-18 and 18-9 MAC and in third place, three games behind Kent State, which improved to 22-6 with a 1-0 win at Eastern Michigan on Sunday.
The top four teams in the final standings earn a berth in the league tournament, which is scheduled to begin on May 24 on the campus of the regular season champion.
The Chippewas go to Michigan State for a nonleague game on Tuesday, May 16 (6:05 p.m.) and then close the regular season with a three-game series beginning on Thursday, May 18 at Western Michigan.
The Broncos are fourth in the MAC at 16-10.
Toledo used one hit – a two-run double by Sykes – along with two CMU errors and a sacrifice fly in the third inning in seizing a 3-0 lead on Sunday.
CMU never led in the game but drew to 3-2 with two runs in the fifth when Justin Simpson flared a bases-loaded bloop double down the left field line to plate two runs.
The Chippewas left the bases loaded in the fifth and stranded two runners in scoring position in the ninth.
CMU starter Garrett Navarra (3-3) allowed four runs on four hits, struck out seven and walked three over six innings in taking the loss.
Ryan Insco surrendered a run, walked one, and struck out two over the final two frames in relief.
The Chippewas managed just four hits off two Toledo pitchers, RJ Shunck and Cal McAninch (5-1). McAninch earned the win with five innings of scoreless relief.
