Baseball Drops Nonleaguer at Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State struck for five runs in the first inning on Tuesday in handing Central Michigan a 9-2 nonconferece baseball loss at the Spartans' McLane Stadium.
The Chippewas (32-19) open their final three-game regular season series of the season on Friday (3:05 p.m.) at Mid-American Conference rival Western Michigan.
CMU enters the series in third place at 18-9 in MAC play. The Broncos are fourth at 16-10. The Chippewas have clinched a berth in the MAC Tournament, which is scheduled to begin on May 24 on the campus of the regular season league champion, either Kent State or Ball State.
Chippewa starter Evan Waters (4-1) surrendered seven runs on five hits while striking out five over 2 2/3 innings in taking the loss on Tuesday.
Michael Conte, Ben Vitas, Ryan Insco and Ryan Culley pitched in relief for CMU. The quartet combined to allow two runs on three hits while striking out three.
Michigan State led, 7-0, through three frames and extended the lead to 9-0 with a two-run seventh.
CMU scored twice in the eighth on a Cole Prout sacrifice fly and a Kade Preston RBI groundout.
The Chippewas finished with four hits, two by Jacob Donahue including a double.
