A strong season on the runway closes for the Chippewa junior; two CMU representatives to take on the steeple Saturday evening
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Junior Hayley Manners of Central Michigan Track & Field landed 28th in Thursday's NCAA East Preliminary Long Jump at the University of North Florida, finishing off three attempts with back-to-back leaps of 5.94 meters (19 feet, six inches).
The Chippewas remain in the Sunshine State this week with Emily Paupore and Anya Turner set to run the 3,000-meter steeplechase at UNF's Hodges Stadium on Saturday at 5:40 p.m.
With temperatures in the mid-80s coupled with customary Florida humidity, much of the long jump field was well off its usual pace: Manners's personal-best of 6.28 meters—set at the University of Louisville last month—would have stood seventh in Thursday's event. The region's leader going in, the University of Florida's Jasmine Moore with a 6.98-meter mark, was nearly two feet off of her own pace with a 6.43-meter attempt.
