Chippewas score bonus points in eight matches in posting shutout
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Welcome back to the MAC.
Central Michigan wrestlers won all 10 matches, scoring bonus points in eight of them, in rolling past Edinboro, 44-0, on Sunday in the Chippewas' Mid-American Conference-opening dual at McGuirk Arena.
It was CMU's first shutout since a 40-0 blanking at Buffalo on Feb. 7, 2021. The Chippewas, who dropped three nonconference duals to top-25 teams before Christmas, improved to 3-5. Edinboro is 1-8, 0-4 MAC.
"We wrestled some good competition first semester and now getting into the MAC we feel real confident, we feel like we're prepared," said CMU coach Tom Borrelli, whose team goes to Illinois next weekend for MAC duals with Northern Illinois and SIUE. "I'm excited with where we're headed. We've been improving all year, we're starting to get everything together, we're starting to develop a little bit of depth with some good competition in the room, and it's starting to pay off in our matches."
The Chippewas notched 16 takedowns and surrendered just one, which came in the final bout of the afternoon. CMU wrestlers reached double digits in six of the eight matches decided on points. Both Chippewa pins came in the first period.
"We scored a lot of points in all of the matches and that's really what we've been focusing on, being aggressive, scoring as many points as you can and not just worrying about the outcome, but about winning every situation," Borrelli said, adding that the Chippewas' rugged early schedule is now paying dividends.
"Our kids are maybe not as confident as they need to be because some of them didn't have the outcomes they wanted first semester," he said, "but I think it's made them hungry, it's made them train real hard, and it's showed them what they really need to work on and that's important."
The Chippewas started strong, getting a technical fall win from Sean Spidle at 125 pounds, and never let off the gas.
Andrew Austin (133) won on a major decision, and then Jimmy Nugent (141) and Corbyn Munson (149) posted back-to-back pins to give CMU a 21-0 lead.
Johnny Lovett (157) followed with a technical fall victory and then Tracy Hubbard (165) and Alex Cramer (174) posted consecutive wins on major decisions. Bryan Caves (285) posted the Chippewas' eighth bonus-point win, a major decision, in the final bout of the day.
The Chippewas got decision victories from Adrien Cramer (184) and Cameron Wood (197).
• Wood's 2-0 victory came over Jack Kilner, a senior who came in 16-10 and ranked fifth in the MAC. Wood, who is ranked 10th in the league, improved to 9-10, winning for the fifth time in his last seven bouts in the day's most competitive match.
Wood took a 1-0 lead with an escape early in the third period, and then tacked on the riding-time point.
"That's a big win for Cam," Borrelli said. "He's trying to build his confidence and those kinds of wins help. I think he's figuring things out."
• It marked the first CMU dual-meet wins for Austin, a redshirt freshman, and for Adrien Cramer, a redshirt sophomore transfer. It was the first win at McGuirk for Nugent, a sophomore, who recorded his third straight victory and his sixth in his last eight matches.
Three of those wins have come on pins as he upped his fall total to five on the season in improving to 13-7.
"(Nugent has) really been coming on," Borrelli said. "The biggest thing with him is weight management and he's getting better at it. You can see he has more energy in his matches (lately) than he had at the beginning of the year and then to get (Austin) and Adrien (Cramer) in the lineup is pretty important. It's important to get them that experience."
• Caves overcame an early 3-0 deficit and won going away, getting a two-point near fall late in the second period to break a 3-3 tie. He then recorded a takedown and another two-point near fall in the third period.
It was Caves' first major-decision victory of the season and he entered the dual having lost six of his last seven matches.
"Bryan's probably had the toughest competition, individually, of anybody on our team," Borrelli said. "He's wrestled some really highly ranked guys and he's never really had an easy match yet this year. Even that match today was nip and tuck until the end. We're just trying to get him to turn the corner a little bit, and most of it is confidence."
