Soccer Earns Another Point, Remains Unbeaten in MAC Play at Toledo, 1-1

Muessig scores her career-high fourth goal of the season on a 78th-minute free kick to recover from a first-half penalty goal for the Rockets
TOLEDO, Ohio — Central Michigan Soccer improved to a six-match unbeaten streak with a 1-1 draw at Toledo Sunday which added the team's ninth point toward the Mid-American Conference standings through five league contests.
Â
"I am really proud of our grit and fight to come back from a goal down on the road," Head Coach Jeremy Groves said. "A decent point in the end. In this conference, a point is huge."
Â
Claudia Muessig (Paw Paw, Mich. / Paw Paw) extended her team-high mark to four goals on the season as she struck on a free kick at the left corner of the 18', a foul drawn by Ella Betzold (Essexville, Mich. / Garber) as she drove inside the area. The graduate midfielder's attempt looped in high from her right foot to find the inside of the far post to level the match at its eventual final.
Â
"It was a great bit of brilliance from Claudia. We know she is capable of that."
Â
The Chippewas (4-4-4; 2-0-3 MAC) fell behind in the 16th minute as the Rockets (4-5-3, 1-2-2 MAC) capitalized on a well-executed penalty attempt. The foul was drawn well-inside the 18' as the Toledo striker drove through traffic into significant contact. It was CMU's third penalty ceded this season (at Texas, at Northern Illinois) and the second to be converted.
Â
Jaelyn Dobrowolski (Traverse City, Mich. / TC West), who made her first start of 2024 Sunday, nearly took control of the match in the 88th minute as the Chippewas had numbers in the 18', only for her attempt to skate just outside the far post to her right.
Â
Jenna Little (Portage, Mich. / Portage Central) and Jocelin Zimmerer (Evergreen, Colo. / Evergreen) had near-identical chances, in the 34th and 56th minutes, respectively. Each attempt came from just steps away from the goal after services into the box with Little's attempt snatched by the Rockets' keeper as it hovered over the stripe.
Â
"I think we are disappointed not to win it. We created three big chances today."
Â
Allison LaPoint (Royal Oak, Mich. / Shrine Catholic) allowed her first goal since Sept. 19, just the second MAC team to score on the Chippewa keeper in five matches this season. Toledo's penalty score cut LaPoint's shutout streak at 336 minutes, the second-longest of her career after a 408-minute stretch in non-conference play in 2021—which also marked her career-best three straight clean sheets.
Â
Central Michigan Soccer returns to the CMU Soccer Complex Thursday night for a 7 p.m. league bout with Ball State. The game has been dubbed "Neon Night" and will also aim to raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer.
