11/20/2024 9:56:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Chippewas convert a season-high tying 10 3-pointers, hold Central State to 26 percent shooting in winning second straight game; five Chippewas reach double figure scoring led by Anthony Pritchard’s 18 points.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—Central Michigan won its second straight game as it tied a season-high with 10 3-pointers and took advantage of a 12-0 first half run to register an 86-52 win over NCAA Division II Central State Wednesday night at McGuirk Arena.
With the win, Central Michigan improves to 3-2 on the year. The Chippewas are back in action on Monday night when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn. to play Minnesota on Nov. 25. Tipoff for that game is at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT on Big Ten Network plus.
In the victory Central Michigan scored a season-high 86 points and held visiting Central State to 25.9 percent shooting (14-54). The Chippewas committed a season-low nine turnovers and dished out 15 assists. In the second half, Central State was held to 15.6 percent (5-32) shooting.
"Tonight it was our defense," Central Michigan head coach Tony Barbee said. "Our defense was terrific today, holding them to 26 percent from the floor, 20 percent from 3-point range, well below our established goals for the game. We want to play off of our defense and get guys out in transition and sharing the ball. We had 15 assists and nine turnovers. We are sharing the ball, we're unselfish, we've got multiple guys who can make plays. And now, we're being better stewards with the basketball and not being as reckless as we were earlier in the year."
Anthony Pritchard led Central Michigan with 18 points and a career-high four 3-pointers, Jakobi Heady added 15 points (7-7 FT) and seven rebounds, Damarion Bonds scored 13 points and grabbed a team and career-high eight rebounds, Kyler VanderJagt contributed 12 points, and Cayden Vasko scored all of his 11 points in the second half.
Central Michigan took control of the game in the first half with a 12-0 run. Trailing 14-7, Central Michigan answered with its 12-0 run fueled by two Bonds 3-pointers. VanderJagt started the run with a layup, Pritchard grabbed a defensive rebound and dribbled down the floor for a layup, then Bonds hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Heady finished off a layup for a 19-14 lead with 10:44 to play in the first half. CMU never trailed again after the run.
Bonds converted two free throws to give Central Michigan a 29-20 lead, then Heady finished off a 3-point play for a 32-20 lead with 4:29 to play. CMU pushed the lead to 37-22 with 1:05 to go in the first half on a jumper by Bonds and then Pritchard swished a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer for a 41-25 lead. Pritchard finished the half with 13 points, Bonds added 10 and Heady had nine.
Another Pritchard 3-pointer with 15:45 to play increased CMU's lead to 20 points (49-29). The Chippewas went up 55-30 with 13:42 to play.
CMU led by as many as 38 points (82-44) with 4:27 to play.
Central State was led by Ramar Pryor, who scored 17 points. Raevon Thomas finished with 13.
"We've got to get healthy," Barbee said. "We've got to get our fours and fives back on the court. We've got a ton of guys—Hunter Harding, Armani Mighty, and Mohammad Habhab, and tonight Ugnius Jarusevicius—sitting on the bench in street clothes. Hopefully we get some of these guys back healthy. We've got a chance to become a really good team."
