Central Michigan defeated Eastern Michigan in four sets to collect their 20th win of the 2024 season.
YPSILANTI, Mich. – A quick turnaround from the weekend in Ohio was no trouble for the Central Michigan Volleyball Team as they collected a win over Eastern Michigan in four sets (25-18, 25-18, 19-25, 25-20). The Chippewas advance to 20-6 on the season, 11-3 in MAC play, as the Eagles fall to 13-15 overall and 7-7 in the conference.
"Coming off of short rest after two emotional matches this weekend in Ohio, was a challenge to our group." said Head Coach Mike Gawlik. "We had to not only recover physically, but also mentally to get ready to play another match. I think any road win is a good win, so we are going to take this back to Mount Pleasant and get ready for what is ahead."
The Chippewas came out hot in the first set, hitting .387 in that set. Grace Thomas led the Maroon & Gold in set one with four kills. The freshman middle block would end the night with 12 and no attack errors.
Lauren Schrock ended the night with 18 kills for the Chippewas, hitting .385. 18 kills for Schrock ties a season high, falling just one short of her career high (19).
On the offensive side, Natalia Rejment and Abby Olin each added nine kills. As a group, the Chippewas hit .273, much aided by the 47 assists from junior setter, Allie Korba.
"We attacked well in three of the four sets." Said Gawlik. The Chippewas hit .366 in set two and .250 in set five, with a .119 in that fourth set they dropped to the Eagles. "I love the way we rebounded after that third set. It took a lot from a lot of people. We had a big night from Schrock, we had a big night from Grace, we had a big night from Abby. All from an offensive perspective."
The game was also a defensive showing for CMU as the team recorded 70 digs, with five different players with double-digit digs. Freshman libero, Hannah Langton, finished the night with 12, as well as Alina Anderson. Rejmnet added 13 and Aly Gurtiza and Korba each had 14 digs.
"Defensively we dug a lot of balls tonight, and we had a lot of people contribute to that. We have a lot of players on our team that could be liberos at a number of division one schools. We only dress one, but I feel that at times, we have four out there in Hannah Langton, Aly Gurtiza, Alina Anderson, and even Natalia. That is something that is going to serve us well down the stretch."
Olin and Kasson recorded five blocks each for CMU, and the team totaled 14 in the four sets.
Central Michigan will welcome Kent State to McGuirk Arena over the weekend. The teams will play Friday, the 8th at 6 p.m. and will close out the regular season at home against the Golden Flashes at 4 p.m. on Saturday as they celebrate senior night.
"We are going to get a lot of friendly faces in McGuirk this weekend with our alumni celebration and senior night, and that is exciting! We get to celebrate the history of our program with some people that may be coming back for the first time in a long time, and that is something we really are looking forward to."
The match on Friday will be the annual alumni day celebration as the Chippewas welcome back graduates of the program to celebrate the history of Central Michigan Volleyball.
