MOBILE, Ala. – The Central Michigan Softball Team opened their season with two losses to notable programs in the opening day of their 2024 season at the South Alabama Invitational. In game one, the Chippewas fell to the Eastern Kentucky Colonels 7-4 and closed the night out with a 10-0 loss to the host Jaguars in five innings. The start of the games was delayed almost three hours due to rain. Â
Â
GAME ONE:
Freshman Carly Sleeman made her name know in her first collegiate at bat when she lasered a double to the right center gap scoring Abbey Tolmie and Michaleigh Vallimont. Sleeman's hit gave CMU a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Eastern Kentucky answered with a run of their own in the top of the second.
In the bottom of the third inning, Abbey Tolmie hit a hard ground ball at the shortstop where she reached on the error and Skylar Coberley crossed home scoring the third Chippewa run of the day. A two RBI single for the Colonels evened the score at three all in the top of the fourth, where they would later take the 4-3 lead with a single to right field.
Grace Koenig charted her third hit of her freshman debut with the game tying RBI in the bottom of the fourth, where Coberley scored her second run of the day.
That would be the end of the scoring for the Chippewas for the evening.
Grace Lehto took the start in the circle and threw six and one-third innings before being relieved by junior pitcher, Madelyn Wallace. Wallace allowed the final three runs that would conclude the 7-4 loss for CMU.
Â
GAME TWO:
The outing against South Alabama started with a seven-run bottom of the first for the Jaguars, that would be impossible for the Chippewas to overcome. Freshman Brooklyn Compau charted her first start, allowing all seven runs. Madelyn Wallace came in for the bottom of the second inning and would throw the rest of the game that was cut at five innings with a run rule victory for South Alabama.
After Wallace entered, South Alabama was held to three runs, all of which came in the fourth inning.
Â
The Chippewas recorded 11 hits on the day, two freshmen in Grace Koenig and Keira Tolmie who charted three and two hits, respectively.
Â
WHAT IS NEXT:
Central Michigan will play two more games on Saturday, February 17th as they take on EKU again at 12:30 p.m. (ET) and UAB at 4:30 p.m. (ET) before one more game on Sunday against NIU to close out the trip.
