Wrestling Falls in Dual Finale to 10th-ranked Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Michigan won all 10 matches on Sunday in handing Central Michigan a 39-0 loss in a nonconference wrestling dual at McGuirk Arena.
It was the Chippewas' final dual of the season and they finished 8-8 with four of those losses coming to ranked teams. They now look ahead to the Mid-American Conference Championships in two weeks at Kent State and then, the NCAA Championships in Kansas City, March 21-23.
The 10th-ranked Wolverines (8-4) came into the dual with a starting lineup featuring nine ranked wrestlers. Six of those wrestlers are ranked in the top 10 in their respective weight classes.
The Chippewas fell to Michigan State, 18-13, on Friday. That loss ended CMU's five-meet win streak.
"That's why we wrestle these matches to try and prepare ourselves for the MAC," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "The good thing is, when you wrestle someone like this, it points out a lot of things that you're not doing right, and that happened.
"Obviously today we saw some things we really need to work on, fundamental things. Both of those (duals) helped us with that. Now we've just got to home in on those things, take the lessons we learned to the conference tournament and be better."
Borrelli took the opportunity to rest a few of his starters and give some of his younger wrestlers a crack to wrestle in a dual against obviously strong competition.
Chippewa starters Sean Spidle (125), Corbyn Munson (149) and Alex Cramer (174) sat out the dual. Freshman Grant Stahl (125), redshirt sophomore Trenton Wachter (149) and redshirt sophomore Chandler Amaker (174) filled in.
Michigan scored bonus points in six of its wins, including three technical falls.
The most competitive matches came in the middle weights, where CMU's Johnny Lovett dropped a 3-2 decision to 15th-ranked Will Lewan at 157; the Chippewas' Tyler Swiderski fell, 4-1, to 10th-ranked Cameron Amine at 165; and Amaker fell by the same score to Joseph Walker.
Lovett, who is ranked 26th, and Lewan went all the way to the second tie-breaker with Lewan winning with 5 seconds of riding time; Swiderski, an unranked redshirt sophomore, took Amine to overtime where Amine scored a takedown for the victory.
Both Lewan and Amine are three-time All-Americans.
"We had some opportunities at 57 and 65," Borrelli said. "We just didn't take advantage of it. But you've got to realize who we're wrestling. We've just got to be better than that. When you get in on a shot, you have to finish it. You're not going to get that many chances against highly ranked guys."
