NEW BRAUNFALS, Texas – Central Michigan's Ashley Goh closed with a 4-over par 75 on Tuesday to finish with a 5-over 218 total and in a tie for third place at the Texas State Invitational women's golf tournament at Landa Park Golf Course.
It was the Chippewas' first spring tournament of the 2023-24 season. They are scheduled to partake in the Rio Verde Invitational in Rio Verde, Ariz., Feb. 23-25.
It marked the 13th career top-10 finish for Goh, a senior from Johor Bahru, Malaysia. She posted three top-10 finishes, including one top five, in five fall events.
Goh opened the tournament on Monday morning with a 75 and then carded a program record-tying 3-under 68 in the Monday afternoon round.
She began Tuesday's final round four shots off the pace and finished seven shots behind medalist Hailey Jones of Texas State, who posted with a 2-under 211 in leading the 65th-ranked Bobcats to the team title.
Goh, who teed off on the seventh hole under shotgun start format, carded three birdies against three bogeys and, with two holes remaining, stood at even par for the day and 1-over for the tournament, in second place, and still within striking distance of Jones.
But Goh made a quadruple bogey 8 on No. 6, her penultimate hole, to end her hopes of catching Jones, who closed with a steady 1-over 72. Goh finished with 10 birdies over the 54 holes, tying for the second most in the tournament.
"She played really well," CMU coach Ryan Williams said of Goh. "She got a really bad break on that hole, which was unfortunate, but she played really well, she played great all tournament.
"It's just something that you hope she can brush off and move on from; she should be feeling really good about how she played."
The Chippewas posted a 319 team score on Tuesday to finish 12th in the 14-team field. They were one shot behind 11th-place Utah Valley and four back of 10th-place Loyola. CMU opened Tuesday's final round tied for seventh at 625.
Chippewa senior Rachel Kauflin shot 81 on Tuesday to finish at 232 and tied for 29th in the 80-player field. She carded 34 pars, tying for the fifth most.
Also for CMU, Evanka Shah closed with an 80, while Alexis McMurray and Mackenzie Baustad both shot 83. McMurray finished at 246, Shah at 248, and Baustad at 253.
"There were definitely some good performances by some individuals throughout the tournament," Williams said, "and hopefully there were some lessons learned and the kids realize the kind of work that they need to put in going forward. We have what we need at home to get ready and be sharp for tournaments; we need to put in the effort and be ready to go. Hopefully this feeling will be motivating."
Texas State posted a 291 on Tuesday for an 861 total. The Bobcats, who led by 35 shots entering the final round, finished at 861 for a 37-shot margin of victory over runner-up Sacred Heart.
