Chippewa Lacrosse found firepower early on the attack with 5-2 first quarter; margin never exceeded one goal in second half
INDIANAPOLIS — Central Michigan Lacrosse dropped its 2024 season-opener, 13-12, on the road at Butler Friday afternoon in the first of a two-game weekend slate in the Hoosier state.
Â
Skye DePrado (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) posted a career-high six goals in the contest, which tied for sixth all-time for a single game in program history. DePrado's career tally of 29 goals has her in line to soon rank in the top ten in the young program's history as well.
Â
Amanda Hilderbrandt (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) had a hand in four goals of a 5-2 first-quarter effort, scoring her first goal of the season—10th of her career—for a 2-1 lead, assisting on the first, fourth and fifth strikes including both of DePrado's first two.
Â
Five Chippewas found the back of the net in the first half before DePrado reached a first-half hat trick with over 90 seconds before intermission. Hanna Wenger (Loveland, Ohio / Loveland) scored her second career goal in the first, followed by Makenna Huhn (Parker, Colo. / Chaparral), Sandy Edwards (Stuart, Fla. / Jensen Beach) collected her 10th career goal in the second. Sadie Hinkle (Medina, Ohio / Medina) became the sixth and final Chippewa to light up the scoreboard in the third for a 9-9 tie at the time.
Â
The tight final score is supported throughout the box score across the board aside from one key area: free position scoring. CMU was held to seven empty opportunities compared to a 4-of-8 mark for Butler, with two of the Bulldogs' three fourth-quarter scores coming on free position opportunities.
Â
Central Michigan Lacrosse heads over to South Bend, Ind. to battle No. 7 Notre Dame Sunday for a Noon first draw. Notre Dame is the first of three matchups with teams ranked in the top 12 of the preseason Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association national poll (at No. 1 Northwestern, March 3; at No. 12 Michigan, March 9).
