The Chippewas stung together seven hits but fell short against in-state foe, Oakland in a nonconference battle.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan dropped a nonconference game to Oakland on Wednesday afternoon while battling cold weather, wind, and shivers. The Chippewas fall to 5-19 overall on the season and Oakland advances to 10-10 on their season.
Grace Lehto threw 6 2/3 innings for CMU, allowing seven hits, walking 1 and striking out three. Sydney Campbell for Oakland threw a complete seven innings where she struck out 11 Chippewas.
Oakland loaded the bases in the first inning with no outs, but the Chippewas held them there. An infield fly, force out at home and a pop-up catch by Skylar Coberley left the Golden Grizzlies on base with no runs.
The second inning was quick for both sides with no runs across for either side. Maddie Springer started the third inning with a double to right center. Tailynn Knapp laid down a bunt and reached on the error to advance Springer to third. A four-pitch walk from Keira Tolmie who pinch hit for Lucy Cronin loaded the bases for CMU. The Chippewas were not able to capitalize on the opportunity.
In the top of the fifth inning, Oakland scored on wild pitch to take the 1-0 lead.
Starting the sixth inning, Grace Lehto and the Chippewa defense again left the bases loaded with Golden Grizzlies when Lehto collected her third strikeout of the game. In the bottom of the inning, Carly Sleeman started the inning with a base hit through the left side, but CMU would not be able to get a run across letting Oakland maintain the 1-0 lead.
Two runs came across for Oakland in the top of the seventh with two RBI doubles. Lehto was relieved by Mackenzie Langan who faced the final batter to get a pop out.
Tailynn Knapp started the final attack for the Chippewas with an infield single, Abbey Tolmie followed it up with a double to left center. A four pitch walk for Emma Lotus loaded the bases for CMU with one out. Carly Sleeman grabbed her 16th and 17th RBI of the season when she doubled down the third base line, scoring Tailynn Knapp and Abbey Tolmie.
The comeback efforts would fall short with back-to-back strikeouts ending the game at 3-2 in favor of Oakland.
Central Michigan will head to Athens, Ohio for a weekend matchup with MAC foes Ohio. The Chippewas are slated to take on the Bobcats at 3 p.m. on Friday and in a double header starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
