Central Michigan Softball traveled to Athens, Ohio where they split the first day of the weekend with the Bobcats.
ATHENS, Ohio. – The Chippewa Softball Team defeated the Ohio Bobcats, 1-0 in game one of their three game series on Friday afternoon. Ohio then beat the Chippewas 4-1 in the second game to finish the day with a doubleheader split. CMU moves to 6-20 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Ohio advances to 14-18 overall and grabs its first MAC win of the season to move to 1-5 in conference play. The two teams will face off in the final game of the series on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
In game one, Grace Lehto threw her first shutout of her senior season as she went seven complete innings against the Bobcats allowing just three hits, walking one, and striking out three. Lehto was supported with offense from her team as the Chippewas recorded six hits. The complete game for Lehto was her third of the 2024 season, and her 54th in a CMU uniform.
The lone run of the game was scored when Abbey Tolmie singled to right field, driving home Angela Petrovitch who entered the game as a pinch runner. That run came in the third inning and would be the only run scored in the game. A. Tolmie went 2-4 in the first game with hits coming from Emma Lotus, Skylar Coberley, Allyssa Hollo, and Maddie Springer, each with one. Each team left six runners on base in the first game.
In the nightcap, the Chippewas again struck first in the fourth inning when Carly Sleeman scored as Michaleigh Vallimont reached on an error by the Bobcat shortstop. That would be the lone run again for the Chippewas in the game. However, Ohio had an answer when they scored two runs on three hits in the bottom of that same inning.
In the fifth inning a Bobcat hit a solo homerun to left field to give them their fourth and final run of the game.
Madelyn Wallace took the start for the Chippewas and was credited with the loss after throwing 3.1 innings, allowing four hits and three of the Bobcats runs. Mackenzie Langan entered in relief for Wallace in the fourth inning to face the final nine batters. Langan allowed just one hit, struck out two and walked one. Wallace moves to 1-5 on the season after making her 13th career start.
"I am Proud of our performance in game one. Our first shutout of the year couldn't have come at a better time in the season. You have look to win every series in MAC play, and we will go out and look to do that tomorrow." said Head Coach, McCall Salmon.
