Edwards’ career-high four goals leads to three Chippewa hat tricks with DePrado, Hinkle; seven players score for the CMU attack
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The recent hot streak on the attack continued for senior midfielder Sandy Edwards (Stuart, Fla. / Jensen Beach) as she marked a new career high of four goals in Central Michigan Lacrosse's 17-11 victory at Youngstown State in Mid-American Conference play Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Chippewas remain undefeated through two games of league play as they tallied three hat tricks behind the work of Edwards, Sadie Hinkle (Medina, Ohio / Medina) and Skye DePrado (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny)—who returned Sunday from a brief two-game hiatus due to injury.
Â
The attack saw eight CMU players find the back of the net as Amanda Hilderbrandt (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) and Makenna Huhn (Parker, Colo. / Chaparral) each notched a pair of goals and an assist, followed by Natalie DiSanto (Waterloo, N.Y. / Waterloo), Hanna Wenger (Loveland, Ohio / Loveland) and a surprise first career goal from junior defender Jozy Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio / Sycamore).
Â
Central Michigan finished with an 18-14 advantage on the draw, just the fourth time this season the Chippewas finished with the edge from the circle. Huhn and Avery Wagnon (Humble, Texas / Atascocita) carried the load with six and five draw controls, respectively.
Â
The CMU defense profited from the strong play in the middle and coupled it with 20 empty possessions for the Penguins in the high-scoring affair. Alexa Martel (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Olympia) posted her second-best game by save percentage this season (.450), though she saw just 20 attempts on cage, coming one save shy of marking her fifth straight double-digit performance.
Â
Central Michigan Lacrosse will make the quick trip over to the Steel City Tuesday to take on Pittsburgh at 3 p.m. for the final non-conference matchup of the 2024 campaign. CMU returns to Mount Pleasant Sunday, April 7 to host Robert Morris for the first of four straight MAC contests to conclude the regular season.
