TAMPA, Fla. – Abbey Tolmie recorded her 200th career hit in the outing against Florida Gulf Coast with a lined shot down the first base line. A. Tolmie is one of eight players in Central Michigan Softball history to reach this milestone.
Central Michigan had a chance to make a comeback in the battle with the Eagles, and did, but ultimately fell short. The Chippewas held the Eagles scoreless for the final four frames while adding a run in the fifth and two in the 7th to reach the final 3-7 score where CMU takes the loss.
The Chippewas fall to 1-13 on the season and FGCU advances to 11-8 on the 2024 season. Next, Central Michigan will head to Madeira Beach to participate in The Spring Games. They will open the tournament with LIU on Thursday, March 4th at 4 pm.
How the Game Unfolded
FGCU struck first with four runs in the first inning, two of those from a two-run homerun. In the second, the Eagles added two more runs with a two-RBI double. The final run for FGCU came in the third when another double scored their final run.
Grace Lehto took the start for the Chippewas and threw two innings where she issued five hits, allowed six of the Eagles seven runs and faced 14 batters. Cierra Laska entered in relief to throw for two innings. Laska allowed two hits and the final run for the Eagles striking out two and facing nine batters. Mackenzie Langan continued on her dominant streak when she entered to close the game at the start of the fifth inning.
Langan faced the final 10 batters of the Eagles final nine outs. Langan allowed one hit in her three innings, struck out one, and forced six flyouts for FGCU.
Central Michigan got on the board for the first time in the fifth inning when Grace Koening doubled, which scored Bryn Elsenpeter from first base. Elsenpeter reached on one of CMU's six walks on the afternoon.
