The Spring Games Opens With 5-2 Loss for Softball

Central Michigan Softball fell to LIU in the opening game of The Spring Games in Madeira Beach.
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Central Michigan Softball fell in the opening game of The Spring Games hosted in Madeira Beach, Fla. The Chippewas fell 5-2 to Long Island and move to 1-15 on the season while LIU advances to 7-9 on their season.

LIU struck in the first inning when a base hit up the middle scored their lead off batter that reached on a bunt. That would be it for the sharks until the sixth inning when they posted two runs and another two in the seventh.

Madelyn Wallace (1-4) took the start for CMU in the circle and surrendered seven hits over 5.2 innings of work. Wallace allowed three runs over her 26 batters faced. Mackenzie Langan entered in the sixth with two outs to face the final seven batters where she gave up two runs.

In the fifth inning, Central Michigan started to string together offense in the fifth inning. Maddie Springer singled through the left side to start the inning. Springer's base hit was followed up by a bunt from Grace Koenig where a throwing error by the pitcher advanced Springer to third. A double steal from Koenig and Springer would allow the first run of the game to cross the plate for CMU in Springer. A sacrifice fly from Michaleigh Vallimont would score Koenig to give CMU the 2-1 lead at the end of the fifth.

Central Michigan would not score another run in the game while LIU added four more.

The Chippewas will next take on Bucknell and Manhattan on Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. respectively.
