
Softball Captures Win over Manhattan in Fitting Fashion

The Chippewa Softball team split on day two of The Spring Games, falling to Bucknell 5-8 in the first game and rebounding to defeat Manhattan 8-7.
The Chippewas snapped an 11-game losing streak as they took down Manhattan in their third game of The Spring Games. CMU moves to 2-16 on the season while Bucknell advanced to 7-10 and Manhattan fell to 1-10 on their respective seasons. Central Michigan will close out the Florida trip and preseason games on Saturday, March 9 as they take on Chattanooga (10 a.m.) and Colgate (3 p.m.)
GAME 1
The day started tough for the Chippewas as they surrendered eight runs in the first two innings of the afternoon. Bucknell scored five in the first and three in the second inning – but would be held scoreless for the rest of the game. Grace Lehto (0-8) took the start in the circle giving up six hits, allowing eight runs, and striking out two. Head Coach McCall Salmon on Langan, "Really proud of the innings she have given us to date and her progress getting to this point.
The offense started for the Chippewas in the fourth inning. CMU recorded 12 hits in the game against Bucknell – a season high. "Our bats came alive today and I loved our fight at the plate today." Maddie Springer hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning which scored Keira Tolmie. But Springer would not be done for the day. The junior doubled down the left field line in her next at bat to start the bottom of the fourth inning. Her double scored Allyssa Hollo reached on a double of her own down the same left field line.
Hollo went yard in the 6th to bring the score to 3-8 in favor of the Bison. In the 7th inning, K. Tolmie singled which scored Skylar Coberley who reached via single through the right side. When Emma Lotus grounded out to the second baseman, Carly Sleeman came home.
CMU would ultimately fall short in the battle, 5-8 but the Chippewas showed some of their most promising softball of the season thus far in the battle.
GAME 2
The streak was broken, the Chippewas battled, and the full team effort came out on top for the Maroon & Gold.
Central Michigan jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning. When Michaleigh Vallimont started the offense with a sacrifice bunt to the third baseman that allowed Sleeman to cross home plate after reaching on a walk. A walk drawn by Grace Koenig would walk in Allyssa Hollo who reached base on a throwing error from the Jasper third baseman. Abbey Tolmie singled to left field which scored Maddie Springer and her sister, Keira Tolmie; 4-0 Chippewas.
The Jaspers struck back in the top of the third with two runs of their own coming from a sacrifice fly and a passed ball.
In the third inning, CMU added another run with an RBI from Emma Lotus, who singled up the middle driving Sleeman home, once again.
Manhattan added five runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the 7-5 lead over the Chippewas. However, CMU had an answer; a three-run answer.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Chippewas added three more runs as Abbey Tolmie grounded out, but scored Springer from third and a two-RBI single from Sleeman drove in Coberley and Koenig.
The 8-7 score at the end of that inning would hold through until the end as Cierra Laska entered the circle to close the game. Laska threw 10 pitches and got three pop ups for her defense to catch, that sealed the deal. "I am proud of Cierra. That was a huge inning for her to come in and close out the game." said Salmon.
Brooklyn Compau charted the win for the Chippewas (1-2) after throwing 5.1 innings, facing 23 batters and striking out three. Madelyn Wallace entered in the 6th to face the final five batters and two outs of that inning.
Fifth year Head Coach McCall Salmon talks on the betterment of the team that comes game to game. "Growth! We have been tested in many ways and every day we are getting better each game. Confidence was our word of the day today."
In the game against Manhattan, Michaleigh Vallimont played in her 150th career game as a Chippewa. "Mac's voice, energy and enthusiasm are unmatched and she has made a lasting impact on this program."
