Yturralde leads CMU with 2-under 69 after first 18
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – After the first 18 holes of the three-day Peoples Golf Championship, presented by Sea Palms Resort, Central Michigan Men's Golf stands 15th of 22 teams as it begins the full dive into the Chippewas' spring season.
The tournament, hosted by Western Carolina, continues on Friday (8 a.m.) before wrapping up the final round on Saturday.
As a team, the Chippewas combined for 293 (+9), with Philippe Yturralde leading the way. The sophomore, who made a team-high 5 birdies, shot a 2-under 69 to tie for 8th in the field of 128.
"We started off very well," said Head Coach Kevin Jennings. "We were setting the pace for the event and were tying for the lead for the first few holes. The rust showed, a little bit, but we still see a lot of good, promising things and we're looking forward to tomorrow's round."
Also for the Chippewas, Jeffrey Andrus finished 1-over after the first 18, tying for 37th. Arie Jackman shot 74 to tie for 56th.
Easton Phillips and Orlando Coons each shot 78, tying for 103rd.
After the first day of play, Davidson College leads, having shot 10-under as a team. Wright State's Shane Ochs shot a 6-under 65 to lead the individual leaderboard after the first 18. The Chippewas lead seven programs in the rankings, including Mid-American Conference opponent Bowling Green, which is 19th.
"We thought that this tournament would be a good measuring stick to see where we are," Jennings said. "We're playing some teams that are around where we are and above where we are, we want to compete with individuals that are at a higher level so that we can continue to raise and elevate what we're doing."
"This is a great opportunity for us to continue moving in the right direction with our program, understanding and learning exactly what it's going to take for us to put down our marker in this world, so to speak."
With 36 more holes to play, Jennings and his team look to continue building the momentum to lift the Chippewas in the rankings.
"I want the guys to continue to believe in themselves and not allow doubt to creep in," Jennings said. "I want them to continue to be confident and place trust in their skill sets, abilities and preparations, so they can continue to compete as hard as they can.
"As long as they're out there doing that, I'm very confident that we're going to continue to move in a great direction."
