Chippewas tally seven total personal-bests as distance unit represents CMU at the GVSU Extra Meet
ALLENDALE, Mich. — Central Michigan Track & Field sent its distance delegation to Grand Valley State Thursday afternoon for the GVSU Extra Meet.
Â
Natalie Newcombe continued the Chippewas' recent success in the 1500-meter event with a personal-best 4:30.12, third-best in CMU history. Anya Turner—who finished in lock-step with Newcombe Thursday—set the second-best program time in the event last week at Ohio State. The pair finished 10th and 11th in the GVSU event.
Â
Libby Munderloh maintained her recent momentum in the 400-meter hurdles, claiming victory in the event in 1:04.95. The St. Louis, Mich.-native posed her personal-best 1:03.97 at the Chippewa Challenge two weeks ago. Munderloh pulled double-duty for CMU with a top-25 finish in a crowded 800-meter field.
Â
Chesney Wilke paced a group of six Chippewas in said 800-meter with a personal-best 2:12.60 and a seventh-place finish overall. Her mark came within two-tenths of a second of cracking the CMU top-ten in the event. Jessie Gibbins (18th; 2:16.98) added a PR of her own in the event as she, Maija Rettelle (23rd; 2:18.73) and Munderloh all joined Wilke in the top-25.
Â
Emma Netzel, Lauren Hasty, and Ava Pergitone each posted new PRs in the steeplechase, 1500 meters and 5,000 meters, respectively on the night, while Cambrie Smith made her outdoor 5,000-meter debut.
"We had some great things happen today," Head Coach Jenny Swieton elated. "It was a big step forward with a lot of PRs. I'm really happy with how it went, super impressed with the PRs from Chesney, [Emma] Netzel, Natalie and Ava."
Â
The action-packed weekend continues for Central Michigan Track & Field tomorrow for the first of two days in the Clark Wood Open, hosted by the University of Louisville. The hammer throw will open Friday's portion of the event at 11 a.m. ET.
