Three homeruns in the first game accelerated the CMU offense in game two for the win in six innings.
The Chippewas advance to 15-29 on the season and 12-10 in MAC play. CMU will close out the regular season May 4th and 5th as they host Ball State for senior weekend. The Chippewas graduate eight seniors this year and they will be celebrated following the game on Sunday.
Game 1
Grace Lehto took the start in game one, throwing three scoreless frames where she retired the first 11 Golden Flashes. Lehto would be relieved by Cierra Laska in the fifth inning, who faced the final five outs.
The bats were hot for the Chippewas though as they still held a lead after the Golden Flashes grabbed four in the fourth.
Maddie Springer started the scoring for CMU with a sacrifice fly in the second that scored Michaleigh Vallimont. Vallimont reached on a single to the shortstop to start the inning. The second run for the Chippewas came in the third inning with a solo homerun from Skylar Coberley. Allyssa Hollo matched Coberley's shot with a homerun of her own in the very next at bat. At the end of the third, CMU held a 3-0 lead.
Allyssa Hollo collected her second and third RBI of the day with a single up the middle to score two more Chippewas in the fourth inning. Coberley and Abbey Tolmie scored those two runs after both reaching via single to left field.
In the fourth inning, all four runs came with the ball being put in play after Lehto was ahead with two strikes on each batter.
Kent State grabbed three more runs in the bottom of the fifth via a two-RBI triple and an RBI single.
Central Michigan added a sixth run in the sixth inning with Coberley's second homerun of the day.
The comeback effort in game one would not be enough reaching the final of 6-7 in favor of Kent State.
Game 2
The nightcap went in favor of the Chippewas as they defeated the Golden Flashes in six innings. Mackenzie Langan threw her first career complete game and allowed just one hit in the six innings. The lone hit was a two-run homerun for Kent State in the second inning. Langan struck out six and allowed just two walks.
The Chippewas won 11-2 in the second game, scoring in two innings. Collecting five runs in the third and six in the sixth would seal the deal for the series split.
The scoring once again started with Maddie Springer, when she doubled to left center, scoring Grace Koenig from first base. Carly Sleeman reached on a fielder's choice and Springer crossed home for the second run of the inning. Skylar Coberley singled to score Rachel Cairo and Allyssa Hollo doubled to scored Coberley and Sleeman. After three complete, CMU 5, Kent State 2.
The sixth inning would allow CMU to add six more runs when Allyssa Hollo led the inning off with her second four bagger of the afternoon. A two RBI single from Abbey Tolmie made the game 8-2 in favor of CMU. Rachel Cairo reached on a fielder's choice, Tailynn Knapp, who pinch ran for Michaleigh Vallimont, crossed the plate, 9-2 CMU. Two more runs would score via Sleeman single and a caught stealing effort from Coberley that allowed Cairo to touch home before the out.
Central Michigan will host Ball State on Saturday and Sunday to close out the regular season, hunting for a spot in the 2024 Mid-American Conference Tournament. The top six teams in the conference will advance.
