Chippewa Track & Field Competes in Spartan Invitational, Day 1 of Tennessee Invitational

Personal bests from Anya Turner and Natalie Newcombe in the 1500m in East Lansing
EAST LANSING, Mich./KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — An eventful Friday, full of progress, between two states for Central Michigan Track and Field.
The Chippewas took on the one-day Spartan Invitational on Friday while another group competed in the opening day of the Tennessee Invitational, earning lots of personal bests and firsts in competition for both meets.
At Michigan State, 19 Chippewa student-athletes competed in various events.
In the field events, Claire Kavanagh was 9th in the Open Discus with a mark of 36.45m. Competing in the shot put, Ereka Risner made continually improving shots and finished 14th with a mark of 11.86m, and Lynette Cipolla competed in the high jump.
On the track, Sky Austin ran the 100m and 200m, placing 9th and 16th respectively.
Emma Fountain placed 3rd in the 400m with a time of 58.87; Nicole Olivieri came in 8th with a time of 1:00.23.
Anya Turner, Ericka Bigham, Natalie Newcombe, Jelena Prescott and Jaci Rife ran the 800m. Turner finished 3rd and Bigham placed 7th overall followed by Newcombe (11th), Prescott (32nd) and Rife (35th).
The Chippewas in East Lansing ran two sections of the 1500m, unseeded and seeded. Ava Pergitone won the unseeded 800m; Lauren Hasty was 3rd, followed by Amelia Gouin (11th) and Cambrie Smith (17th).
Turner and Newcombe both ran personal bests in the seeded 1500m. Turner took 5th, with a time of 4:31.99, and Newcombe was 10th (4:37.44). Following the pair were Prescott (17th), Emma Janesak (28th), Jessie Gibbins (31st), Ambria Nagel (34th) and Jolie Fisher (41st).
Payton Sabourin made strides for the Chippewas in Knoxville, finishing 2nd in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:01.96. Behind the senior were Emma Francis (5th) and Libby Munderloh (11th).
Peyton Korytkowski and Kaitlynn Rush ran the 200m, finishing 24th and 39th, respectively.
In the 1500m, Maija Rettelle placed 23rd, followed directly by Chesney Wilke in 24th.
In the field events in Knoxville, Sarah Daniel finished 8th in the long jump with a mark of 5.68m.
Victoria Merrick (13th) and Emily McLean (16th) competed in the hammer throw.
The group will conclude the Tennessee Invitational on Saturday, competing in the 100m, 100m hurdles, 400m, 800m, 5000m, shot put and 4x100 relay, while the rest of the Chippewas will head to the Oakland Golden Grizzles Invite for another one-day competition.
