Tolmie Doubles Three Times as Chippewas Fall to Western Michigan Twice

CMU Softball drops both games of the doubleheader to in-state rival Western Michigan.
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Central Michigan Softball battled in both games against Western Michigan on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell short in both. Game one went in favor of WMU, 3-1 and game two went the Broncos way as well, 4-1. CMU moves to 6-23 overall and 3-5 in MAC play while Western Michigan advances to 17-14 overall and 6-4 in the conference.
Grace Lehto and Madelyn Wallace both threw complete games for the Chippewas, in the first and second games respectively. Lehto allowed six hits in the first game, where the Broncos scored their runs with an RBI single in the 1st, and a two-run homerun in the 4th.
The lone run for the Chippewas came in the third inning when Abbey Tolmie doubled to right field and Maddie Springer scored. Springer reached on a walk and A. Tolmie's double was the lone hit for CMU in game one. Western Michigan's Rissa Bajusz struck out the first six Chippewas she faced and tallied 12 total strikeouts in the game.
Game two started with a WMU run on a sacrifice fly to Abbey Tolmie in center field in the 2nd inning. The Chippewas answered in the top of the third when Skylar Coberley reached on an error and Abbey Tolmie crossed the plate.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Western Michigan answered the Chippewa run with a run of their own when a runner was safe at the plate after a fielder's choice to second base. The Broncos struck again in the 4th and 6th, WMU scoring one run in each inning, one on a throwing error by the Chippewas and the other with a sacrifice fly.
Back-to-back doubles from Abbey Tolmie in as many plate appearance in the second game would ignite a small flame in the Chippewa offense. Her first at-bat of game two, a double to left center. Her second at-bat of game two, a double to left center.
Abbey Tolmie left the two games against the Broncos with three doubles, a walk and one of the two runs scored by CMU and an RBI on the other run.
Madelyn Wallace took the start in game two and threw a full six innings for the Chippewas. Wallace issued nine hits, allowed four runs, and walked none. Between the two games, the Chippewa pitching staff allowed no walks over 50 batters faced.
The Chippewas and Broncos will face off for the series finale on Sunday at noon. The game will take place at Ebert Field in Kalamazoo.
