Her third selection of the season was earned through a pair of double-digit outputs in saves, a season-best .684 save percentage in conference victory over Robert Morris
CLEVELAND — Junior goalie Alexa Martel of Central Michigan Lacrosse earned her third Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor of 2024, and fifth of her career, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon. The vote among the league's coaches was split between Martel and Eastern Michigan's Maddie Porter.
The Chippewas remain undefeated atop the MAC standings thanks to 13 saves from Martel Sunday in a 13-6 victory over Robert Morris, 11 of which came in the second half as CMU broke away from the Colonials. Martel posted her ninth of 10 double-digit performances for saves this season earlier in the week at Pittsburgh.
Martel stands as the NCAA I leader in total saves (153) this season, encroaching on her own program record for saves in a single season (175), set last season.
The junior has taken the Central Michigan record outright for most Player of the Week distinctions at the conference level with her fifth career selection Tuesday, breaking a four-way tie at four with Jocelyne Lemay '19, Brianna Hart '21 and Natalie Karlen '21.
The Chippewas have made four appearances in the MAC Player of the Week release this season. Martel won her first of the season on March 5 after nearly tying her own program record for saves in a game (17) against No. 19 Colorado, then her second on March 19 after clearing 300 career saves against Lindenwood (March 15) and sealing a MAC-opening win over Detroit Mercy (March 17). Skye DePrado (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) won the first offensive award of the season on February 13 after dropping six goals on Butler in the season-opener.
Central Michigan Lacrosse heads to Ypsilanti, Mich. Sunday for a 10:30 a.m. first draw against Eastern Michigan, also undefeated to open conference play. The 2024 regular season home schedule concludes the following Sunday (April 21), hosting Akron for Senior Day.
