Easton Phillips breaks top 25 in 75 man field
ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Central Michigan Men's Golf team competed in the first two rounds of the Golden Grizzlies Intercollegiate hosted by Oakland University Saturday at the Katke-Cousins Golf Course. The Chippewas left off in 11th place of 15 teams with Easton Phillips leading the Chippewas tied for 25th.
The Chippewas tallied a 615 (+39), carding 308 (+20) in round one and 307 (+19) in round two. CMU is 39-over heading into the final round on Sunday, which is seven shots behind Detroit Mercy, three ahead of Cleveland, and four ahead of Mid-American Conference opponent Ohio.
"I knew we would be in against a lot of schools that are congruent to and in our footprint," said Head Coach Kevin Jennings of the 15-team field. "I knew that this would be a good opportunity for us to gauge where we are."
MAC opponent Bowling Green finished the day in seventh place, having shot 296 and 302, respectively, clocking 598 on the day.
Phillips carded a 75 (+3) in the first round followed with a 74 (+2), a one-shot improvement, in round two. Heading into the finale, the junior is at 149 (+5).
"(Easton) was hitting it a little better today and actually could have scored a little better," said Jennings. "He hit some good shots and he's looking forward to tomorrow to continue his development and moving in a good direction with the rest of his teammates."
Rounding out the Chippewas card were Jeffrey Andrus, currently in 43rd, (154, +10), Keith Hunter, who is 47th, (155, +11), Orlando Coons (66th, 161, +17), and Nicholas Kilgore (72nd, 165, +21).
Leading the tournament is Butler, who holds a three-stroke lead of 573 over Wright State. Behind the front runners are two teams from host Oakland, their 'B' team is tied with their primary team with a score of 585.
The Chippewas will finish in Rochester tomorrow with Nicholas Kilgore hitting the tee-box first on hole 10 at 8:45 a.m.
"Just continue to exercise our strategy," said Jennings, on preparing for the final round. "Continue to try and improve from round to round in what they're doing,"
