CMU Golfers finish 13th
ROCHESTER, Mich. – Central Michigan Men's Golf wrapped up its first official tournament of the 2024-25 season on Sunday at the Golden Grizzlies Intercollegiate at Katke-Cousins Golf Course, hosted by Oakland University.
Easton Phillips ,who tied for 19th, led the Chippewas with a three-round total of 221 (+5).
Phillips shot 72 on Sunday to meet course par. He moved up from his 25th-place mark on Saturday, having shot 75 (+3) in round one and 74 (+2) in round two.
As a team, CMU carded a 917 (+53) a 302 (+14) in the final round. Sunday's round was the lowest scoring for the Chippewas, as they tallied a 308 (+20) and 307 (+19) in rounds one and two respectively on Friday.
Jeffrey Andrus and Nicholas Kilgore also carded their best rounds of the tournament on Sunday. Andrus logged a 73 (+1) to finish tied for 38th with a final total of 227 (+11). Kilgore placed 72nd with a score of 244 (+28), having shot 79 on Sunday.
Keith Hunter (236, +20) and Orlando Coons (239, +23) finished tied for 61st and 66th, respectively.
"(The team) were able to see some things that we need to do and see some things that we touched on," said Head Coach Kevin Jennings. "We're looking forward to be able to compete again. Like always, we welcome the opportunity to compete, but most of all, we want the opportunity to learn so that we can apply what we are learning, elevate what we are doing and move forward."
Wright State won the event, posting an 862 (-2) with its top two finishers taking first and second place of the tournament in Timmy Hollenbeck (211, -5) and Shane Ochs (212, -4).
The Chippewas will play next on Sept. 30, traveling to Farmington, Pa. to compete in the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational hosted by West Virginia. The two-day tournament will take place at Mystic Rock Golf Course, a Pete Dye-designed course which was the host location of the PGA Tour 84 Lumber Classic (previously Pennsylvania Classic) from 2000-2006.
"The opportunity for us is getting a gauge as to where we are within our program as far as the growth," said Jennings. "If we were a human who just turned three, there is still a lot of learning that needs to take place in order for that individual to be independent and self-sufficient.
"This is another opportunity for just that, for us to be a little bit more independent when it comes to growth, elevation, and the opportunity to get better and measure ourselves with established programs to see where we are and what we need to do to continue to move forward."
