FARMINGTON, Pa. – Central Michigan Men's golf battled through rainy conditions on Monday in the opening rounds of the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational, hosted by West Virginia.
Through the first 36 holes, the Chippewas are in 14th with a score of 635 after collecting a score of 309 and 326 in rounds one and two, respectively.
The Chippewas' score of 635 is led by Easton Phillips, who shot a two-round total of 154 for 49th place, carding a 5-over par 77 in each round.
Closely following Phillips is Jeffrey Andrus in 52nd, who shot 3-over par 75 in round one and followed with 81 in round two.
Rounding out Central Michigan's card were Keith Hunter in 67th, who shot 80-82 – 162, and Nicholas Kilgore, 74th, 83-86 – 169.
Junior Orlando Coons finished round one at 5-over for 77 but withdrew before the conclusion of the second round due to injury.
"It was a steady rain literally all day," said Head Coach Kevin Jennings on the course conditions. "It wasn't a downpour. It was consistent, just steady rain. A lot of the guys said that they have never played in anything like that.
"Playing in these types of conditions do nothing but elevate and allow these guys to gain valuable experience. What we experienced today are conditions that we could get into during conference play, we're going to be in Ohio in late April. We know anything could happen; it could be the same exact weather there that we experienced today.
"(Golfing in this weather), talking about the challenges that were out there and how to combat those challenges and circumvent them, all of those things play to our benefit."
Host West Virginia leads the tournament, despite being unable to finish its second round due to darkness. Nearly through 16 holes, the Mountaineers have totaled 544, with 288 from round one and 256 so far in round two.
The Chippewas are one of four competing teams able to finalize round two, alongside Mount St. Mary (314-314 – 628), William & Mary (305-307 – 612), and Bucknell (310-297 – 607).
All teams will begin play at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. The Chippewas, alongside teams with finalized round two results, will begin round three, meanwhile others will complete round two.
