The Chippewa volleyball team hit a season high .382 against the RedHawks as they grab their 10th win of the 2024 season.
OXFORD, Ohio — The Central Michigan Volleyball team started Mid-American Conference play off with a 3-0 win over the Miami (OH) RedHawks on Thursday evening. CMU took down the RedHawks 25-8, 25-14, 25-19 en route to a 1-0 start in MAC play.
Head Coach Mike Gawlik and his team collect their 10th win of the season, moving to 10-3. "Any time you can get a win to open conference play, let alone on the road, that is great" said Gawlik,
The Chippewas were led by senior opposite Krystina Kasson who killed 19 balls, hitting .632. Kasson and the entire Chippewa offense only had four attack errors all night. Natalia Rejment, a junior outside hitter, also charted 12 kills and hit .387 on the night. Overall, CMU hit .382 on the night, their highest of the 2024 season.
Set one went to CMU 25-8 as they used a 16-0 run to close the opening set of conference play. Natalia Rejment led the team with seven kills, Abby Olin added four, and Alina Anderson dug nine balls in the opening set.
In the second set, CMU took a 6-1 lead and utilized a handful of runs to close out on the 25-14 victory. In that set, three Chippewas recorded three kills, Rejment, Kasson and Olin while CMU held the RedHawks to a .073 hitting percentage.
Closing out the night was a 25-19 victory to give CMU the Thursday night sweep. A more closely contested match, CMU did not let the RedHawk offense find a groove. The Chippewas hit .333 in the final set, again holding the RedHawks low with a .167. Kasson recorded six of her 12 kills in that final set, as she hit .867, scoring on six of her seven attempts.
Overall on the night, again a full team effort. "I would do a disservice to not talk about every one of our players tonight, Natalia, she was unbelievable. Kass, unbelievable. Abby, unbelievable. And Grace was unbelievable as well. Tonight is just a good team win for us, after we were thrown a curveball, we hit it out of the park!"
Central Michigan has been running a 6-2 offense for the 2024 campaign, but against Miami (OH), they ran a 5-1 due to injury, missing sophomore setter, Keelyn Muell. In her absence, junior Allie Korba stepped up and set the offense to one of their best performances of the season. "We didn't find out we would be without Keelyn until, quite literally, yesterday (Wednesday) morning, so we had to flex."
Allie Korba recorded 32 assists on the night, and again, led CMU to an offensive showcase. "I couldn't be more proud of Allie" said Gawlik, "she performed really well, and her teammates around her performed very well for her…but Allie just did a spectacular job stepping into a bigger role, with not much preparation time. She really just set us to an excellent offense tonight. I am really just proud of her."
Central Michigan will take on the RedHawks again on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. before coming home to face Eastern Michigan on October 1st.
