Chippewas sweep team, individual event wins
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Gymnastics shared the joy of winning with CMU Wrestling on Friday as the two teams emerged victorious in front of a crowd of almost 1,500 in McGuirk Arena during the Chippewas' first 'Rumble and Tumble' event since 2013.
The Chippewa gymnasts bested Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green, 193.225-189.975, to advance to 1-0 in the league and 2-1 overall.
"The team was really excited to stay in McGuirk and compete alongside wrestling in this event," said Head Coach Christine MacDonald. "It really brought an exciting energy, especially in the first rotation, when wrestling was also going on and the girls were supporting them just as much as they were engaged in our own performances.
"I thought it brought a great energy to the arena and it was a strong performance today."
Utilizing some fresh faces in their lineups, the Chippewas found success on the vault and floor exercise, raking in scores of 48.700 and 48.800, respectively. CMU outscored the Falcons on all four events of the meet.
Sophomore Jenna Germond earned the event win on vault with a score of 9.775. Avah Bootz and Luciana Alvarado-Reid tied for second, tallying 9.750 each.
Samantha Shannon, also a sophomore, returned to competition in style and placed 1st on the uneven bars and balance beam with scores of 9.800 and 9.775, respectively.
"We had a great start in welcoming Samantha Shannon back to the balance beam today," MacDonald said. "She's been out for about a month-and-a-half now due to injury, so to get her back into our lineup was a really big boost for our beam team."
The Chippewas had another memorable moment as they welcomed senior Ariana Light to officially compete on the balance beam, who struggled with injury in previous seasons which prevented her from competition. She tied for 5th on the event.
"For our senior, Ariana Light, it was her first truly competitive meet," said MacDonald. "Another shoutout to her; that's something that was really special for us as a team to watch her perform."
CMU scored a meet-high 48.800 on floor, highlighted by strong performances from Hannah Appleget, Quinn Skrupa, Zoe Zimmerman and Luciana Alvarado-Reid.
Appleget and Skrupa tied for first with a score of 9.825 while Zimmerman, a freshman, and Alvarado-Reid shared a three-gymnast third-place with a score of 9.800.
"Next weekend we are going to have another great opportunity to compete with some new faces as we work on finding our set competitive rotations," MacDonald said.
CMU is slated to face the Falcons again on Sunday, Jan. 23rd (2 p.m.) at Bowling Green's Stroh Center in a non-league tri-meet matchup with Southeast Missouri State.
