Chippewas Collect Fifth Straight Win in Sweep Over Kent State

Taylor Cripe and Grace Thomas each log 11 kills in Friday night sweep at Kent State
KENT, Ohio – The Central Michigan Volleyball team logged their fifth straight victory in a 3-0 showing over Kent State. The Chippewas stand at 6-5 in Mid-American Conference play and move to 9-14 overall. The Golden Flashes enter the weekend at 8-14 and 3-8 in the conference.
Central Michigan took the first and third sets 25-18, and the second set 25-19.
Grace Thomas and Taylor Cripe each logged 11 kills, Natalia Rejment found herself with 10.
The Chippewas came out to a hot start, after conceding the first point the Chippewas went on an 8-1 run, forcing a timeout from the Golden Flashes' coaching staff.
Kent State clawed their way back to a tie game with a solid run of their own. After some back-and-forth CMU pulled away to go up 20-15, forcing a second Kent timeout.
CMU kept its distance over the Golden Flashes to close out the set, winning 25-18. Thomas logged six kills, Rejment found herself with five.
In the four matches Grace Thomas has played against Kent State, totaling 12 sets, she has tallied 43 kills and just four errors, dating back to her freshman season in 2024 with the Chippewas.
The Maroon & Gold came out to another hot start in the second set, forcing the Golden Flashes to take time after a 9-5 Chippewa start, highlighted by a block from Rejment and Thomas.
Solid play, highlighted by Thomas' first ace of the day led to a Chippewa lead of 19-11, forcing Kent State's second timeout of the set.
Kent State found life after their time out, but the Chippewas found their footing and came out on top in the second set 25-19.
Keelyn Muell led the Chippewas after the first two sets with 17 assists. Grace Thomas added two more kills to lead CMU with eight.
A back and forth third set took a short break after four straight Chippewa points put CMU up 15-11 at the media time out.
Kent State was forced to take a timeout quickly, as the Chippewas won three of the next four points to take an 18-12 lead.
Kent State and CMU would each collect three points before Kent called their final timeout of the set.
Kent then put on a fight, finding themselves down 22-17, but the Chippewas would collect three of the next four points to seal the sweep.
Muell ended the night with 32 assists coming from 73 attempts.
Brooklyn Conner and Rejement led the Chippewas in blocks, logging five and four, respectively.
Rejement led CMU with nine digs, followed closely by Izzy Swiercz and Olin, each with eight.
The Chippewas will next head to Ypsilanti for a mid-week match against Eastern Michigan – an opponent CMU has beaten in ten consecutive matches. The match is slated for Tuesday, October 28th at 6 p.m.
