Volleyball Drops Five-Setter to Toledo

Izzy Swiercz and Grace Thomas each charted 13 kills in loss to Toledo in McGuirk Arena.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan Volleyball Team dropped a five-set match to Toledo in McGuirk Arena on Friday night.
The loss marks the third loss in three matches for CMU in five sets. The Chippewas dropped to NIU on September 25th and rival Western Michigan on September 26th.
Izzy Swiercz and Grace Thomas led the Chippewas offensively, each with 13 kills, and Taylor Cripe charted 11 for CMU.
The 13 number marks a new career high for Swiercz in five sets and ties a five-set career high for Thomas.
Cripe recorded five aces for the Chippewas, and Central Michigan recorded 11 total on the night, tying a season high in five-sets.
Set one went in favor of Central Michigan, 25-22, ending with a 5-1 run.
The Chippewas led 11-5, and the match was then tied at 14. An attack error from a Rocket moved CMU in front, 18-17, and the set was point for point until the final run giving the Chippewas a 1-0 lead in the match.
In set two, Toledo and Central Michigan were again back and forth, trading leads and runs. Toledo closed the set out on a 3-0 run, reaching the final of 25-22 in favor of the Rockets.
Set three, a victory for the Chippewas, 25-21. Early in the set, Central Michigan led 6-1, forcing a Toledo timeout. CMU led by as much as eight at 20-12. Despite the efforts from the Rockets, the Chippewas took a 25-21 victory in the third.
The fourth set was a win for Toledo, which sent CMU to their third-straight five-set match since MAC play started.
In the fourth, the set was decided once again 22-25, and yet again, was a close fought battle, going back-and-forth.
Toledo led 15-9 and the Chippewas fended off three set points, but the final eventually sent the match to a fifth set.
In the fifth, the Chippewas trailed 7-3, and again defended three match points, but eventually fell to the 15-9, and 2-3 in the match.
For the 2025 season, Central Michigan falls to 3-12 (0-3 MAC), while Toledo moves to 12-3 (3-0 MAC).
Central Michigan will next host Bowling Green on Saturday afternoon. The match with the Falcons is slated to start at 4 p.m. in McGuirk Arena.
