Sager, Hunter win to lead CMU to victory over Evansville
DADE CITY, Fla. – Keith Hunter and Jeffrey Sager won their respective matches on Tuesday as the Central Michigan men's golf team won its final match at its spring-season opening event, The Match Play, at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.
The Chippewas defeated Evansville, 3 ½-2 ½, to finish 1-2 in its three matches. On Monday, the Chippewas fell to eventual Match Play champion Richmond, 6-0, and to Bowling Green, 3 ½-2 ½.
"Considering that we hadn't competed in quite some time and we've been playing golf with Frosty and Rudolph, the gentlemen competed very well," CMU coach Kevin Jennings said. "There's a big difference between losing a match and getting beat, and the gentlemen in my opinion did not lose (on Monday). That's a testament to their competitive wherewithal. They went out and competed.
"They did the same (Tuesday) and we were able to come out on the other side and we'll take all of what we learned from this event and move forward and continue to elevate."
Hunter defeated Evansville's Omar Khalid 2 and 1, and Sager took a 2-up win over Jamison Ousley. CMU's Jeffrey Andrus, Orlando Coons and Nicholas Kilgore each finished all square in their respective matches.
Andres Rodriguez defeated Easton Phillips, 3 and 1, for Evansville's lone victory in the match.
The Chippewas finished tied for sixth place in the eight-team event. They are scheduled to partake in the Houston Christian Colin Montgomerie Invitational in Sugarland, Texas, March 3-4.
The Match Play was CMU's lone match play event of the spring portion of its schedule. The remainder of their seven spring events are more traditional stroke play.
"It's advantageous to start the spring with a match play event because it allows us to get our competitive juices going without it being as penal as medal play," Jennings said. "The guys responded very well and we look forward to using this as we move forward."
