Chippewas Complete Day 1 of Two-Meet Weekend at Grand Valley

Chippewas run seven personal bests
ALLENDALE, Mich. — Central Michigan Track and Field got the weekend started on Friday at the Grand Valley Big Meet, competing in the first day of a two-day, two-meet event.
The Chippewa women, as well as three from CMU Men's Cross Country, competed alongside 84 institutions in one of GVSU's largest track and field events of the season.
Chippewa sprinters Kaitlynn Rush and Sky Austin competed in the 60m, with Rush moving onto the afternoon finals among eight competitors.
The senior ran a season-best 9.62 in the preliminaries and 9.64 in the finals to finish 6th overall. Austin, a sophomore, ran a personal-best 7.85 to finish 24th of a 42-runner field.
Lexi Hurst and Amelia Gouin ran the 600m, finishing 8th and 12th, respectively, out of 18 runners. Hurst, a freshman, ran a personal-best 1:39.31.
Lois Creasey and Libby Munderloh finished 21st and 25th, respectively, in the 800m. The pair both ran personal-bests.
Freshman Olivia East ran in the mile invitational, finishing 26th.
Five CMU runners ran in the 5000m across two sections; Kate Jenkins, Joanna Kelley and Nikki Carothers in the second section, and Logan Brazee and Emma Netzel in the third.
Jenkins ran a personal-best 17:34.44 to finish 12th in her section, followed by Kelley in 17th, who also achieved a personal-best time. Carothers finished 24th.
Brazee and Netzel finished 11th and 12th, respectively, with Netzel running a personal-best.
Rounding out Friday's track events was the 4x400 meter relay team of Robyn Watts, Sophia Garland, Danica Shamion and Libby Munderloh finished 8th of 12 competitors, finishing in 3:54.27.
Chippewa Men's Cross Country had three representees in the 5000m, Miciah Smith in the fourth section and Greg Janesak and Clay Kuiper in the fifth section.
Smith finished sixth of 20 runners in the fourth section, while Janesak and Kuiper finished 19th and 21st, respectively, in the 23-runner section five.
Sophomore Emily Yoshino placed 5th in the pole vault with a height of 3.70m, a height which ranges in the top 10 best all-time indoor pole vault heights in CMU history. Yoshino stands tied for fifth n the record books, having achieved a career-best height of 3.85m at the Jack Skoog Open on Jan. 17.
CMU senior Emily McLean placed 4th of 25 competitors in the shot put with a mark of 13.70m. Gracie Merrick placed 15th.
Merrick, a sophomore, additionally competed in the weight throw, where she finished 30th with a mark of 14.60m.
The Chippewas are slated to compete again in the GVSU Big Meet Saturday, the second of the weekend pair of meets. Additionally, Natalie Newcombe and Chesney Wilke will compete in Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invitational, where Newcombe will run in the mile and Wilke in the 800m.
