
Men’s Golf Finishes Day One of Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational

Chippewa golfers finish 14th, Tohoku Fukushi University leads the pack through 36 holes.
NAPA, Calif. – Chippewa golfers played through the first 36 holes of the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational on the North Course of the Silverado Country Club and Resort Monday afternoon.
The 14-team, 72-hole tournament boasts an 80-man field, and is hosted by Central Michigan.
Easton Phillips leads the Chippewas, he finished tied for 50th, shooting 78 (+6) over the first 18 and 74 (+2) on the second, totaling 153.
Jeffrey Andrus and Jeffrey Sager tied at 156 on the day, good for 62nd in the field. Andrus carded 78 (+6) in both rounds, Sager recorded an 83 (+11) before a 10-stroke improvement of 73 (+1) in the second round.
Keith Hunter and Nicholas Kilgore rounded out the Chippewas team performance. Hunter placed 73rd with round one and two scores of 83 (+11) and 78 (+6), respectively, for a 161 total. Kilgore recorded 84 (+12) over the first round and closed the day at 80 (+8) tying for 75th at 164.
Orlando Coons, entering the tournament as an individual withdrew before the second round. He carded 80 (+8) over the first 18 holes.
The Chippewas finished the day in 13th place, with a round one steam score of 323 and a round two score of 303, totaling 626 on the day.
The Chippewas look to continue their round-by-round improvement heading into the final day of the Bridgestone Collegiate.
"I think we showed a little bit more resiliency and a little more strength of character in the fact that we were able to dig in and play a little better," CMU Head Coach Kevin Jennings said of the Chippewa golfers after round two, "That's always the sign of a good team and a good competitor when you're able to learn, apply, and elevate."
Tohoku Fukushi University, hailing from Japan, holds a seven-stroke lead over the field, totaling 562 after day one. Santa Clara holds second place at 569, followed closely by Nihon University (Japan) at 570.
