Chippewa Women’s Basketball returns to the Academic All-District release for the first time since 2020
GREENWOOD, Ind. — Senior guard Jess Lawson (Las Vegas, Nev. / Legacy) of Central Michigan Women's Basketball was named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team, the organization announced Tuesday.
Lawson is the seventh player from the program since 2006 to earn the distinction, the first since Kyra Bussell '21.
To qualify in women's basketball, a player must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.50, be at least a sophomore academically and either compete in 90 percent of their team's games or start 66 percent of games.
The first-year Chippewa was an integral part of the lineup, starting all but one contest. She led CMU with nine rebounds per game (third in the MAC) while second on the team at 11.1 points per game behind MAC Freshman of the Year, Madi Morson (Canton, Mich. / Salem).
The Las Vegas-native became the fifth player in program history to record a triple-double in a blowout, 75-48, victory over Ohio (Feb. 5) and was the shortest player in NCAA I to record an 18-rebound game this season at Northern Illinois (Jan. 29).
CMU took a notable step forward in 2024-25 under second-year Head Coach Kristin Haynie as it earned its first MAC Tournament berth since 2021 on a 14-17 record, 9-9 in conference—an eight-win increase overall, five in MAC play.
Lawson's selection is the second of her career, as she also earned CSC Academic All-District honors at NCAA II Illinois Springfield, where she also set season records for points and steals en route to becoming UIS's first All-Great Lakes Valley Conference first team selection.
