Five Chippewas in double-digits, seal victory with 14-5 run in final five-plus minutes
INDIANAPOLIS — Central Michigan Women's Basketball took down Butler, 68-59, at Hinkle Fieldhouse Wednesday night.
The Chippewas posted a spread the offensive production as five players landed in double-figures, led by Madi Morson (Canton, Mich. / Salem) with 14 points.
Nekhu Mitchell (Baltimore, Md. / McDonogh) had 12 points, followed by Zareia Chevre (St. Paul, Minn. / Simley), Ayanna-Sarai Darrington (Lexington, Ky. / Frederick Douglass) and Demetria Prewitt (Madison, Wis. / La Follette) all with 10 each.
Central Michigan had two key runs in the contest.
A 13-4 run was posted in response to Butler's largest lead of the night, 17-9 six minutes into the contest. Prewitt posted seven straight points at the end of the run with three straight makes inside, the second of which was converted for a three-point play.
A 14-5 run ended the contest for the Chippewas. Morson was the catalyst here with eight straight points from the field over a three-minute window of the final four-plus minutes of the contest.
The defense produced 14 steals on 23 Bulldog turnovers, led by four each from Chevre and Taylor Anderson (South Lyon, Mich. / East) who added eight points with a six-for-six night from the free throw line.
The Chippewas tallied a 34-24 advantage on the boards, led by Mitchell's seven rebounds. Five players finished with five or more off the glass; Mitchell and Darrington combined for eight of CMU's 14 offensive rebounds.
Central Michigan Women's Basketball returns to the road next Wednesday (Nov. 19, 7 p.m. ET) for a visit to Detroit Mercy. The Chippewas host Eastern Illinois the following Saturday (Nov. 22, 1 p.m. ET).
