Central Michigan looks forward to Desert Mountain Invitational Saturday
SUGAR LAND, Texas – Central Michigan men's golf wrapped up the final 18 holes of the Colin Montgomerie Invitational hosted by Houston Christian University Tuesday morning at the Sweetwater Country Club.
Easton Phillips led the Chippewas in their final round, carding a two-over par 73. Phillips met par on the back nine as he totaled 234 on the tournament to tie for 59th in the 79-man, 14-team field.
CMU recorded a 934 three-round score to finish 14th in the tournament while battling windy conditions; Tuesday's 303 marked its lowest-scoring round. In rounds one and two on Monday the Chippewas recorded scores of 306 and 325 respectively.
"The wind gusting and changing directions while standing," Head Coach Kevin Jennings described, "assisting players on a par three the wind blows from two, three different directions. You've got five players coming through there and you've got three or four different conditions at each moment. It's a very good moment to gain some experience in a good setting, on a good golf course, with good competition."
The added challenge early in the spring schedule was welcomed by the future-focused Chippewas.
"It always comes down to post-season play," Head Coach Kevin Jennings said. "Having the MAC in our footprint, the Midwest, sometimes weather can be a little challenging and we have experienced some of that today. We had a front come through and in a matter of literally 90 seconds the temperature dropped 15 degrees and by the end of the day we were back in our short sleeves."
Jeffrey Andrus and Keith Hunter each totaled 76 on the round, while Orlando Coons and Nicholas Kilgore logged 78 apiece.
Andrus led the Chippewas with a 231 total to finish in 51st, Hunter logged 236 to tie for 66th, Coons tallied 237 tying 71st, and Kilgore ended with 243 for 76th.
CMU Men's Golf makes a brief three-day turnaround to compete at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate in Scottsdale, Ariz. Saturday.
"We're looking forward to continuing what we learned here to be more consistent in competition and learn to compete at a higher level. I'm sure the guys are excited, I'm very excited for us."
The event hosted by Michigan adds a new element as CMU looks to build toward the Mid-American Conference Championships on the horizon.
"That field is a little stronger than this field, so it will be another great opportunity for us to continue to raise the awareness of our program, as well as raise the competitive level of what we're trying to do. That is our mission in what we're doing by bringing men's golf back to Chippewa Athletics, try to raise the profile of the program as well as the athletic department and the institution."
The Chippewas will battle two MAC foes this weekend: Eastern Michigan and Miami (OH). Tee time is set for 9:30 a.m. ET at the Desert Mountain Resort, Outlaw Course on Saturday.
