SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Central Michigan's men's golf team wrapped up its first day at the Desert Mountain Collegiate Saturday on the Outlaw Course at Desert Mountain Resort, hosted by Michigan.
The 17-team, 96-man event began with a two-hour delay due to rain Friday night, allowing enough daylight to finish the first round, while the second round was suspended due to darkness.
Keith Hunter led CMU's efforts through the day shooting 73 (+1), tying for 34th at the end of the first round. Seven holes into round two, he worked his way to 29th in the field.
Hunter collected five birdies in the opening round, two each on a par-four and a par-five on either side of the turn as well as the par-three 12th. He finished strong with two birdies in his last three holes, which carried over with back-to-back birdies to open round two.
Orlando Coons wrapped round one at 75 (+3) tying for 47th, while Easton Phillips carded a 76 (+4) to tie for 57th.
Jeffrey Andrus and Nicholas Kilgore rounded out the lineup shooting an 83 (+11), 86 (+14), respectively.
As a team, CMU tallied 307 in round one and stands in 17th place entering day two.
Mississippi State leads the event after shooting a 275 (13-under-par) in the first round, while Mid-American Conference opponents Miami (Ohio) and Eastern Michigan sit in seventh and 13th place, respectively.
The Desert Mountain Intercollegiate will conclude Sunday, with the remainder of round two resuming at 7:30 a.m. MST and round three following.
