Chippewas return March 24 for Bridgestone Collegiate in Napa, Calif.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Central Michigan men's golf team wrapped up play Sunday at the Desert Mountain Collegiate, hosted by Michigan, at the Outlaw Course at Desert Mountain Resort.
Saturday's start was delayed due to cold conditions leading to the second round being suspended due to darkness. Play resumed Sunday morning with the completion of round two, followed immediately by the final round.
"When the guys teed off for their practice round it was snowing, and the next day it proceeded to snow the remainder of the day." Head Coach Kevin Jennings said of the conditions, "The snow was covering the greens, and the first round of the event was a little cold.
"Overall, the conditions of the event were tournament like, firm greens, fast greens. The conditions in my opinion were very good, very fair, and the type of conditions I believe we need to be competing under."
The Chippewas posted a team score of 951 over the weekend, placing 16th in the 17 team, 96-man field.
Keith Hunter led CMU, tying for 67th with a three-round total of 232. He closed out round two with a 76 (+4) before shooting an 83 (+11) in the final round.
Orlando Coons and Easton Phillips tied for 85th each scoring a 240. Coons posted 88 (+16) in round 2 and 77 (+5) in a third round highlighted with three birdies on the back nine. Phillips carded an 82 (+10) in both the second and third rounds.
Jeffrey Andrus placed 89th with a total of 241, one stroke behind Coons and Phillips. He recorded a 79 (+7) in both the second and third rounds.
Nicholas Kilgore finished carding 262 with scores of 86 and 90 in rounds two and three, respectively.
Four Chippewas recorded a birdie on hole 16 in round three, a long par five, an improvement from previous rounds.
"Just understanding a difference in strategy." Jennings said of the hole, "We need to assess what's going on and apply what we're learning and what needs to be done. That's a situation where I was able to assist the guys in understanding a different approach to what's going on."
CMU faced tough competition in Mississippi State who won the event, shooting an 11-under 853. Utah took second at 858 (-6) and Grand Canyon took third with a final score of 859 (-5).
"I think the guys look forward to competing in these types of fields, which is why we are developing tournaments such as our Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational, having a field just as strong as this."
Mid-American Conference opponents Miami (Ohio) and Eastern Michigan each recorded solid outings. Miami placed eighth with a final score of 880, while Eastern Michigan tied for ninth with Virginia Commonwealth University and Kentucky at 883.
Oral Roberts and its five participants withdrew midway through the third round.
The Chippewas return to action March 24, when they host the Bridgestone Collegiate, a two-day event in Napa, Calif. at the North Course of the Silverado Resort.
