Central Michigan records two lowest scoring rounds on the season.
DEKALB, Ill. – The Chippewas men's golf team recorded their highest finish of the season collecting third at the Kishwaukee Invitational in DeKalb, Ill. Saturday despite battling cold and windy conditions.
The one-day 36-hole tournament hosted by Northern Illinois at the Kishwaukee Country Club consisted of a seven team, 41-man field.
CMU recorded their two best team totals on the season thus far, with a first-round score of 299 and a second-round total of 298 for a 597 finish. The teams previous best score in one round was set at the Golden Grizzlies Intercollegiate in September, where the team logged 302 in the third round.
"Sticking with the gameplan, being agile while they were playing, and continuing to learn, evolve, and apply what they are learning in real-time." CMU Head Coach Kevin Jennings said about what was done well by the team Saturday. "I think it helped them all because of the very challenging conditions."
Sophomore Jeffrey Sager led the Chippewas tying for 10th place in his second tournament in the maroon and gold. Sager logged a first-round score of 75 (+5) and improved three strokes for 72 (+2) in the second round for a 147 total.
After logging 74 (+4) in his first round, Nicholas Kilgore began his second round hot with an eagle on his first hole. He finished his second set of 18 holes with 76 (+6) for a 17th place finish at 150 strokes.
Easton Phillips and Keith Hunter each logged 151 on the day to tie for 18th place. Phillips recorded scores of 75 (+5) and 76 (+6) in rounds one and two, respectively. Hunter logged 77 (+7) over the first 18 and improved to 74 (+4) over the second.
Jeffrey Andrus rounded out the Chippewas with a 43rd place finish at 153 strokes. He finished rounds one and two with scores of 75 (+5) and 78 (+8), respectively.
NIU won the Kishwaukee, recording team scores of 276 in the first round and 277 in the second, totaling 553 on the day.
The Chippewas prepare for a quick turnaround, teeing off Monday at the Tiger Invitational hosted by Missouri at the Olde Hawthorne Golf Club in Columbia, Mo.
"Hopefully it'll instill or give us some confidence going forward and confirm some of the things that we're working on," Jennings said, reflecting on how the Kishwaukee Intercollegiate helps the team prepare for Monday.
