CMU dropped game one to Miami (OH) but rallied in the second game of the double header to snap the 12-game win-streak held by the RedHawks.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Margo Jonker Stadium has been called a "fortress" by opponents, and it certainly was on Saturday afternoon for the matchup between Miami (OH) and Central Michigan.
A series that was moved to Mount Pleasant with rainy forecasts in Ohio this weekend, CMU took on the undefeated RedHawks as the away team on their own field.
The Chippewas dropped game one, 3-2 and rallied to win the second game 8-2. CMU moves to 16-16 over all and 8-3 in the MAC, while Miami (OH) moves to 22-16 and 12-1 in the MAC.
The two teams will close the series on Sunday at noon.
Entering the double header, Miami (OH) had won their first 11 Mid-American Conference games and had not lost a conference matchup in 24 games – dating back to April 21st, 2024.
Central Michigan was the last team to beat Miami (OH) in Mid-American Conference play, and they did it again.
Game 1
Brooklyn Compau absolutely excelled for Central Michigan in the circle in the first game loss to Miami (OH). The right-handed sophomore charted a career high 10 strikeouts, three of which were looking.
The 10 K's by Compau mark the first double-digit strikeout game by a CMU pitcher since Grace Lehto had one against Buffalo on April 13th, 2024.
Central Michigan, struck first in the top of the fourth inning. Allyssa Hollo charted a two-out double to left center and Tori Briggs scored after reaching on a single to the shortstop.
The Chippewas took the 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth with an RBI single from Carly Sleeman. Maddie Springer scored on the play after entering as a pinch runner for Rachel Cairo, who doubled to start the inning.
The RedHawks answered in the bottom of the fifth inning where they knocked in three runs with an RBI single and two-RBI double.
Carly Sleeman, Tori Briggs, Rachel Cairo and Allyssa Hollo each charted one hit for the Chippewas reaching their four-hit total in the game.
Game 2
A scoreless activity until the fourth inning, Central Michigan again got on the board first scoring two runs in the fourth inning. A sacrifice fly from Jenna Kuzara scored Ashley Bila – a pinch runner for Hollo, who was hit by a pitch to reach first base.
The second run in the inning came as Keira Tolmie was caught stealing, but Cairo crossed the plate before the out.
In the fifth inning, a three-run home run from Allyssa Hollo extended the Chippewas lead to four, scoring London Williams and Emma Lotus.
Miami (OH) scored in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run.
Three more runs for CMU in the top of the sixth inning. Maddison Diekman doubled down the left field line to score Keira Tolmie, who doubled with one out in the inning.
Emma Lotus recorded an RBI single to score Diekman, and Williams singled to score Lotus to record the eighth run of the game for CMU.
Miami (OH) hit another solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to reach the final score of 8-2 in favor of the Maroon & Gold.
Mackenzie Langan went the distance in the circle where she collected two strikeouts and allowed seven hits.
The victory over the RedHawks snaps the 24-game win streak Miami (OH) held over Mid-American Conference opponents, and their 12-game win streak, their first loss of the conference season.
