Chippewas Rally Late, But Fall Short at Michigan, 8-7

Krzciok homers, doubles to lead 12-hit CMU attack
The Chippewas (17-31) open a three-game Mid-American Conference series with Eastern Michigan on Friday (3 p.m.) at Theunissen Stadium. CMU is 9-15 in league games and in eighth place. The Eagles (18-24, 10-14) are one game ahead of CMU in the standings. Western Michigan is in sixth place, two games ahead of the Chippewas.
The top six teams in the standings earn a berth in the league tournament.
The Chippewas outhit the Wolverines (31-17), 12-9, on Wednesday. They scored three runs in the eighth inning to draw to 8-7 but stranded two in the frame and then went down in order in the ninth.
Brady Krzciok homered and doubled to lead CMU at the plate. It was his second home run of the season.
Mikey Murphy, Aaron Piasecki, Aydin Wright, Cole Kwiatkowski and Zach Knowlton finished with two hits apiece.
Knowlton had a two-run single to highlight the Chippewas' three-run eighth.
CMU starter Jack Smith (1-1) took the loss. He surrendered four runs on four hits over 2 1/3 innings.
Alejandro Espinoza, Max Hammond, Jack Bach, Quin Konuszewski, Carter Campeau and Jack Otis pitched in relief.
