A second half comeback on the backs of Camryn and Ryon gives CMU a 2-1 edge
MUNCIE, Ind. – Central Michigan Field Hockey earned their first Mid-American Conference win of the season at Ball State, Friday.
Ball State struck first, squeezing a shot past Jenna Billig quickly in the second quarter.
Ashley Cogger replaced Billig in the third quarter and kept the Cardinals off the board in the second half. Billig logged three saves on the outing, Cogger with five.
The Chippewas offense got rolling with Mallory Camryn logging her 10th goal of the season by deflecting a shot by Mora Rulli over the Cardinals keeper, tying the game. The assist came as Rulli's seventh of the season.
Ball State nearly took the lead just a minute after the Chippewas first goal. After review, the call on the field was overturned due to obstruction, maintaining the 1-1 tie.
Carolena Ryon delivered with just under five minutes remaining, her MAC-leading third game winner, squeezing a shot past the Cardinals keeper after being fed down low by Cameron Pluciennik. The goal was Ryon's seventh of the 2025 campaign, good for second on the team behind Camryn; Pluciennik's assist came as her second of the season.
Lina (Carolena Ryon) is a phenomenal forward, I think what makes us so dangerous is Mal (Mallory Camryn) is a senior who brings lots of experience and helps to teach our younger players where they need to be and how to maneuver as forwards. CMU Head Coach Jennifer Johnstone said, I think the exciting part for us is there's so many that are contributing to our success and scoring goals that if you take care of one person, you're leaving someone open and they're going to find a way to score for us. That's exciting.
The Chippewas tied the Cardinals in shots on goal with nine a piece, while the Cardinals held the advantage in corners 8-5.
We focused a lot on our attacking 25 opportunities and making the most of them. We talked about our communication and our press so that we could create turnovers and go on attack. I'm really proud of the team for their effort today. Our first and fourth quarter were our strongest and that's what helped us come out on top.
The victory marks CMU's first conference win since a 1-0 showing over Kent State, Sept. 24, 2021.
Central Michigan returns home for an off-day, before taking on MAC foe Ohio Sunday, where the team will celebrate Senior Day.
I think one of the biggest differences this year is our fitness. The girls really worked hard this summer, prioritized their fitness. A day off is tough. We'll travel home, but it's our senior game. I know our girls are going to play hard for their seniors, and we're hoping we can stack two in a row.
