Hot Shooting Miami (Ohio) Defeats Chippewas
1/13/2026 9:27:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Red-hot Redhawks shoot 60.4 percent from the floor, hit 11 3-pointers; Chippewas are led by Nathan Claerbaut’s 16 points.
OXFORD, Ohio—Miami (Ohio) used eight first half 3-pointer to build an early lead, then went on to shoot an opponent season-high 60.4 percent from the floor to register a 100-61 men's basketball win over Central Michigan Tuesday evening at Millett Hall.
Brant Byers led Miami (Ohio) with a game-high 24 points and Justin Kirby finished with 17 points off the bench. The Redhawks converted 32 of 53 field goals, 11 of 23 3-pointers and 89.3 percent of their free throws (25-28). The Redhawks outscored CMU 51-26 in the second half.
Undefeated Miami (Ohio) improved to 18-0 overall and 6-0 in MAC play.
"They are a very unselfish team that is connected," Central Michigan head coach Andy Bronkema said. "They've got a lot of returners and they have a lot of shooters and they are very unselfish, so they make the extra pass, penetrate and kick for another pass, and they knock it down. In basketball when you see shots go in, they've been making them all year. Their shooting has become famous. We couldn't slow the ball down. They make it really difficult. It's a connected team. Tonight, the magical formula of keeping them out of rhythm or sticking in there, tonight wasn't that night. They were free and easy."
"That's a really good team, you've got to give them credit."
The Chippewas were led by Nathan Claerbaut's 16 points on 8-13 shooting. It marked his 14th double figure scoring contest. Three players—Logan McIntire, Tamario Adley, and Keenan Garner—each finished with 11 points. McIntire led the Chippewas with 3-5 3-pointers, Garner hit 5-9 field goals and led the Chippewas with eight rebounds, and Adley hit 4-9 shots.
Miami (Ohio) used eight 3-pointers and 53.8 percent shooting (14-26) to take a 49-35 at halftime lead. Every time the Chippewas would make a run, the Redhawks would answer with a 3-pointer.
The Redhawks used a 7-0 run to go up 18-11 in the first half as Justin Kirby hit 1-2 free throws, Almar Atlason followed with a 3-point play off a layup, and Antwone Woolfolk hit a layup. Miami took a 26-15 lead with 8:19 to play in the first half on a Luke Skaljac steal and layup.
Miami (Ohio) took its largest lead of the game, 17 points (46-29) on a 3-pointer by Peter Suder with 1:21 to go in the first half.
"It's difficult when momentum never shifts," Bronkema said. "I thought maybe at halftime we hit that big 3-pointer right before the buzzer and we could make a little run to start off with and maybe keep the score to 8-11, but they're just really good."
But the Redhawks hit nine of their first 11 shots of the second half to push their lead to 28 points with 11:45 to play. Miami finished the second half by hitting 18-27 shots for 66.7 percent.
Central Michigan dropped to 5-13 overall and 1-5 in MAC play.
