Track & Field Completes Successful First Day at Grand Valley State Big Meet

Chippewas achieve nine personal-bests and five school top-10 times and marks.
ALLENDALE, Mich.—Central Michigan Track & Field traveled to Allendale for the Grand Valley State Big Meet and the Chippewas enjoyed a successful day as they registered nine personal-best marks and five school top-10 performances Friday at the Kelly Family Sports Center. The second day of the meet continues tomorrow.
"I am really proud of how we competed today and I can't wait to see what happens tomorrow," Central Michigan Director of Track & Field Jenny Swieton said.
Distance performances were led by Maya Guikema, who won the women's 1-mile race with a personal-best time of 4:53.06. The time also ranks as the No. 6 best time in program history. Kate Jenkins finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run at 17:22.08
The Chippewas had a successful day in the sprints. Linnearia Richards finished third and ran a personal-best 8.61 in the 60-meter hurdles. The time ranks in sixth place on CMU's all-time top-10 list. Sophia Garland finished with the No. 10 best time in the 200-meter dash and finished eighth in the meet with a personal-best of 24.76. She also took third place in the 60-meter dash with a personal-best 7.63. Danica Shamion ran the No. 7 best time in school history in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best 55.71.
Field events were led by Riley Nielsen, who took fourth place in the pole vault with a personal-best 3.88m/12-8 ¾ vault. The mark ranks No. 5 in school history. Emily Yoshino finished right behind her in fifth place with a 3.73m/12-2 ¾ vault.
Also running personal-bests include Libby Munderloh (57.51) in the 400-meter dash, Mara Szuper (5:09.60) in the mile, Andrea Merin (25.10) in the 200-meter dash, and Robyn Watts (57.79), who placed second in the 400-meter dash.
Central Michigan will compete in tomorrow's GVSU Big Meet, then travel to Ann Arbor to compete in the Silverston Invitational next Friday before hosting the Mid-American Conference Championships in Mount Pleasant at the Jack Skoog Indoor Track.
