Chippewas Fall at Eastern Michigan 66-54
2/17/2026 9:13:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Tamario Adley leads Central Michigan with 17 points, Nathan Claerbaut adds 12 and seven rebounds; CMU hosts rival Western Michigan on Saturday at 5 p.m.
YPSILANTI, Mich.—Eastern Michigan's Gregory Lawson scored a game-high 17 points and Godslove Nwabude finished with 16 points, including eight straight down the stretch as the host Eagles notched a 66-54 men's basketball victory against Central Michigan Tuesday evening at the George Gervin/GameAbove Center.
Next up for Central Michigan, the Chippewas will host Western Michigan on Saturday at 5 p.m. The men play the second game of a doubleheader at McGuirk Arena with the CMU women's team, which hosts Massachusetts at 1 p.m.
With the win, Eastern Michigan snapped an eight-game losing streak. The Eagles shot 49 percent (25-51) from the floor and both outshot and outrebounded (39-33) the Chippewas. CMU shot just 37 percent (21-57) from the floor and 2-17 on 3-pointers.
Central Michigan was led by Tamario Adley, who scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed six rebounds. Nathan Claerbaut chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds. Jalen Kampen came off the bench to score seven consecutive points in the first half.
But the Chippewas didn't do enough to win on the road.
"We didn't deserve to win this one," Central Michigan coach Andy Bronkema said. "We got worried about the wrong things. We made a couple of nice runs, but we couldn't make a shot when we had clean, open looks. We forced 18 turnovers but we also gave away 14. We got outrebounded, we turned the ball over 14 times. Close doesn't count. We just needed to take care of the ball, knock down some shots and quit whining about the physicality, that's how this game is played. Eastern deserved to win because they made a few more plays, but they played harder. They made some big-time plays tonight. We don't feel good about this, but there is something we can do about it."
Eastern Michigan used a 12-0 run early in the second half to take a commanding 19 point lead, 49-30, with 15:33 to go. A stepback jumper by Braelon Green started the run, followed by two Addison Patterson free throws and a Lawson 3-pointer gave the Eagles a 44-30 lead with 16:53 to play. Following a timeout, Eastern Michigan pushed the lead to 19 points when Lawson hit two free throws and Patterson finished off a 3-point play on a layup and free throw with 15:33 to play.
Central Michigan battled back with a 15-2 run to cut the lead down to six points (51-45). A 3-pointer by Adley started the run. Phat Phat Brooks hit 1-2 free throws, Keenan Garner scored on a second chance layup, Brooks hit another free throw, Adley scored on a jumper, Claerbaut added a free throw, Garner followed with a layup off an EMU turnover and Adley cut the deficit to six points (51-45) with 9:15 to play on a layup.
But Eastern Michigan's Godslove Nwabude answered with eight points, including six straight. He hit back-to-back layups, then scored back-to-back free throws to push the margin to 12 points with 5:28 to play.
CMU made one more run, cutting EMU's lead down to seven points with 1:57 to play, but EMU's Mohammad Habhab responded with a 3-point play on a second chance layup.
Taking advantage of 59 percent shooting and 10 points from Lawsom, Eastern Michigan built an eight-point halftime lead (35-27). The Eagles led by as many as 13 points (31-18) at the 5:38 mark, but Central Michigan came right back when Jalen Kampen scored seven consecutive points off the bench to cut the deficit down to six points (31-25) with 4:13 to go. The Chippewas shot 45.8 percent (11-24) in the first half and scored nine first half points on the fast break.
Central Michigan claimed the first meeting between the two schools with a 100-65 victory on Jan. 27 in Mount Pleasant.
