Brooklyn Compau earns the win as CMU defeats Minnesota at the Gopher Indoor Classic.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – A full team effort that meant a lot.
The Central Michigan softball team grabbed a 5-3 win over Minnesota on Sunday afternoon to close the Gopher Indoor Classic with a sweet victory. The Chippewas have defeated three Big Ten teams in the last two seasons: Northwestern, Michigan State, and now Minnesota. Brooklyn Compau earned the victory in all three of those games.
Next on the docket for Central Michigan is a trip to Tennessee to take on Belmont and participate in the Austin Peay tournament.
How it Happened
Minnesota struck first in the second inning. The Gophers scored after a baserunner reached on a double, and crossed home plate on a Chippewa error.
The Chippewas took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when Rachel Cairo doubled to right center and Grace Koenig and London Williams both scored. The run from Williams was her first first of three runs scored in the game.
Central Michigan added another run on an RBI single from Koenig, which scored Ashley Bila. Bila served as the DP for CMU against the Gophers and drew two walks in the outing. Two more runs scored for Central Michigan on a two-out RBI double from Kuzara to right center, that scored both Koenig and Williams again, from second and first respectively.
Minnesota cut the Chippewa lead to two in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run.
Cierra Laska entered the circle to relive Brooklyn Compau in the bottom of the fifth inning. Laska took over with runners on first and second and a 2-0 count. Laska walked the first batter she faced to load the bases but got herself out of the jam with a ground ball.
A glove flip to Alexa Carter standing on home plate ended the inning and the Gopher's threat.
Laska pitched the rest of the game, the final two innings, and issued just one hit, gave up no runs and struck out two. Laksa earned her third save of the season.
Compau, who earned the victory threw 4.2 innings with three hits, two earned runs and four strikeouts.
Central Michigan advances to 5-5 on the season while Minnesota falls to 6-9.
Next up for the Chippewas, they will travel to Tennessee to take on Belmont for a doubleheader on Friday, February 27. The first game is slated to start at 2:00 pm (CT)/3:00 PM (ET).
