Logan McIntire Sets School-Record With 12 3-Pointers, Scores 40 Points, UMass Comes Back to Win 95-89 Decision
2/3/2026 10:41:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Logan McIntire scores a career-high 40 points, hits 12-16 3-pointers and 14-19 field goals; Phat Phat Brooks registers first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 11 assists; Chippewas’ two-game win streak snapped.
AMHERST, Mass.—Central Michigan's Logan McIntire hit a school-record 12 3-pointers and scored a career-high 40 points but it was not enough as Massachusetts rallied to claim a 95-89 men's basketball victory Tuesday night at the Mullins Center.
Massachusetts scored 38 points off 21 Central Michigan turnovers and took advantage of a 37-point, 10 3-pointer performance from Marcus Banks and a 22-point night from Leonardo Bettiol to register the win. Danny Carbuccia dished out a career-high 17 assists and Daniel Hankins-Sanford added 19 points for the host Minutemen.
The Minutemen had an answer for every Central Michigan run. The Chippewas built an 11-point lead with 7:35 to play, but UMass overcame the deficit by scoring 14 of 18 points during one stretch to tie the game at 80-80 with 4:31 to go. UMass hit seven of its last eight field goals and CMU scored no field goals in the final 3:13. The Minutemen then converted 6-8 free throws to close out the game.
In the end, it was the turnovers that proved to be the difference.
"We turned the ball over 21 times and we were outscored 38-12 off turnovers," Central Michigan coach Andy Bronkema said. "You won't win any games with those numbers. The reason we were in it was because Logan had a career night. It was unbelievable. We feel like we wasted it."
"There were certainly a lot of positives tonight. Nick Mullen gave us great minutes. We did play hard, it was exciting. We wanted it tonight. I thought we battled in all areas, but we just didn't take care of the ball. When they put that press on us, that's nothing. We just had lazy passes, no pass fakes. You don't win games turning it over 21 times. Even when a guy drops 40 points, we've got to take care of the basketball. This was the most physical game of the year and that caused some of the turnovers, but in the midst of the physicality, you have to take care of the basketball. Tonight, we were right there and they made that big run at the end."
McIntire's 12 3-pointers established a new Central Michigan game record for 3-point field goals made, surpassing the previous record of 10 held by two players—Marcus Keene vs. Miami on Jan. 21, 2017 and Tommie Johnson vs. Wright State on Dec. 22, 1987. He became the first player at Central Michigan to score 40 or more points in a game since Reggie Bass scored 40 points vs. Northern Illinois on Feb. 25, 2023.
McIntire hit 12 of 16 3-point shots and 14 of 19 total field goals. At halftime, he had 23 points on 8-11 field goals and 7-10 3-pointers, which tied his career-high. Phat Phat Brooks finished the game with his first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 11 assists and Tamario Adley added 12 points.
"It was incredible," Bronkema said. "Logan shot us into position. He was on fire but I have to give his teammates some credit for getting him open and understanding what was going on. A lot of guys play college basketball and never score 20, much less 40. It's pretty cool for Logan. He deserves it and had a great night."
"You've got to give Marcus Banks some credit. He made 10 3-pointers and fired right back. UMass had an answer for everything tonight."
UMass rallied to tie the score at 85-85 with 2:30 to play on Banks' driving layup. Banks hit two more free throws, then after CMU's Brooks converted 1-2 free throws, UMass' Leonardo Bettiol scored on a layup for a 89-86 lead with 1:40 left. From that point on, UMass hit six of its last eight free throws to hold off the Chippewas.
Central Michigan closed the first half on a 14-2 run to take a commanding seven-point halftime lead (47-40). Trailing 38-33, the Chippewas hit three straight 3-pointers, two by McIntire and one by Jalen Kampen to go up 42-39. Phat Phat Brooks made it 47-40 at halftime with a driving layup. As a team, the Chippewas converted 10-14 3-pointers (71.4 percent) and 17 of 29 field goals in the first half.
The two teams combined to hit 26 3-pointers, converted a combined 26-47 from 3-point range (55 percent) and both teams shot over 58 percent from the floor.
The loss snaps CMU's two-game win streak. The matchup marked Central Michigan's first-ever visit to Massachusetts and Amherst, Mass. The Chippewas are back in action when they take on Louisiana in the MAC-SBC Challenge on Saturday in Lafayette, La. Tipoff is at 4 p.m. ET.
