Baseball Surrenders 2 Unearned Runs in 3-2 Loss to Kent State

KENT, Ohio – One of Central Michigan's best pitching performances of the season.
Unfortunately, Kent State was a bit better.
The Golden Flashes took advantage of a Central Michigan error in scoring two unearned runs in the fifth inning on Saturday in handing the Chippewas a 3-2 loss in the game 2 of a three-game Mid-American Conference series at Kent State's Schoonover Stadium.
The Chippewas, 7-9, 1-4 MAC, will attempt to avoid the sweep on Sunday when they and the Golden Flashes (14-4, 4-1) play the series finale (1 p.m.).
Tyson Potts, a senior transfer from Wayland Baptist, combined with freshman Cameron Niehaus to give CMU one of its best mound performances of the season.
Potts, making his second start in a CMU uniform, allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits over five innings. Niehaus tossed three hitless innings, striking out three. The lone blemish on Niehaus' ledger was a hit batter leading off the seventh.
Bryson Webb gave CMU the lead with a one-out solo homer in the second inning. It was Webb's second homer in as many days and his third of the season.
The Golden Flashes tied it in the third on a bunt base hit, a CMU error, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly.
Kent State went ahead in the fifth when Kolton Schaller was hit by a pitch and took second when Brody Williams was safe on an error. They were bunted into scoring position and then Schaller scored on a single to put Kent State in front, 2-1.
Williams then scored from third on a double steal.
The Chippewas threatened in the ninth when Brady Krzciok singled and scored on a Webb double. Webb moved to third on a flyout, but then Kent State closer Evan Holewinski got a strikeout and a groundout to end it.
