The third and final round of the 54-hole, stroke-play event is scheduled for Tuesday with a 9:30 a.m. (ET) shotgun start.
Also for the Chippewas on Monday, Jeffrey Andrus Jr. shot 149 (75-74), Keith Hunter posted a 152 (77-75), and Hudson Vedder carded a 165 (85-80). Andrus is among a group tied for 42nd, while Hunter is tied for 54th.
The tournament is the third of eight the Chippewas are scheduled to play in the spring portion of their schedule.
We're still getting a lot of the rust off from the offseason and it kind of shows in the scoring, CMU coach Kevin Jennings said. We've discussed it and we know and understand that, at this stage, it's not even about making more birdies, but we've just got to keep certain numbers off the card to allow us to position ourselves better so that when we do have solid and better rounds it helps advance us in the event.
We're looking to take advantage of each individual's skill set and play the golf course in a manner that's a little more strategic. The type of challenges that they're having out there are typical of individuals who are getting the cobwebs off, so to speak.
As you continue to do that, your scores get better and more consistent and that's where we are, working to move in that direction.
The Chippewas opened with a 297 team score and then posted a 294 in the second round for a 591 total. They are tied for 11th with Nicholls in the 15-team field.
Howard shot a 21-under 547 (273-274) and leads the tournament by 13 shots over host Houston Christian.
Francisco Perez of Howard leads the tournament at 13-under (64-65). Houston Christian's Brendon Willey is second at 9-under (65-68).
